Concrete Removal in Hendersonville, NC

Hendersonville has a lot of old concrete: patios poured when the house was new, carport slabs, front walks that have heaved on the slope. Jordan comes up from Tryon with a breaker and a trailer, breaks it out, hauls it off and fills the hole so the ground drains.

Concrete Removal in Hendersonville

A mountain town with a lot of settled concrete

Hendersonville is the Henderson County seat, about 2,100 feet up, with Mud Creek running through the middle of it on its way to the French Broad. People have been building summer places here since the 1820s, and the in-town lots show it. Many houses have a patio, a walk or a carport pad that went in decades ago and has been moving ever since.

The 2020 census put the median age in the city near 50, with about a third of residents over 65. That shapes the calls. A cracked walk that has become a trip hazard. A back patio that tilts toward the house. A carport slab that a buyer wants gone before closing. None of it is big work, but all of it needs a machine and somewhere to put the rubble.

The carport slab and the back patio

The most common job in Hendersonville is a slab that came with the house. A carport pad after the carport is gone, a detached garage floor, a patio poured on fill that has since settled a few inches. Jordan breaks it up with the hydraulic breaker on the mini track loader, loads the pieces with the grapple and hauls them off on the trailer.

Footings come out too when they are in the way. An old garage usually has a thickened edge or a short block footing under the slab, and leaving that below grade means hitting it with the next shovel. If the slab is under a structure, the whole thing can go at once; the demolition page covers that side of the work.

Getting to the back of an in-town lot

Older Hendersonville lots are narrow, hedged and often stepped up or down from the street. The mini track loader is sized for exactly that. It fits through a standard side-yard gap, climbs a sloped drive and turns on packed ground without tearing up the yard the way a bigger machine would.

The route gets walked before anything starts. Where a rock wall, a set of steps or a mature tree blocks the way, that goes in the quote. Pieces can be broken smaller and carried out rather than driven out, and that gets priced honestly rather than guessed at.

Loam over red clay, and ground that slopes

The upland soils around Hendersonville are mostly of the Hayesville kind: a loam topsoil over a red clay subsoil, well drained on the ridges but firm and sticky when it is opened up wet. Pull a slab out of that and the hole holds water until it is filled and shaped.

On a slope, the shaping matters more than the fill. The ground where the patio was has to fall away from the house, not toward it, or the first storm puts water against the foundation. The spot is graded so it sheds, and where a yard already has a wet corner, the yard drainage work in Hendersonville can go on the same visit.

NC811, the county permit office and Mud Creek

Buried lines are marked through NC811 before any breaking or digging, and in North Carolina the request goes in three working days ahead. A patio can hide a water line or a buried power feed to a shop, so the locate is called in on every job.

Henderson County Permits & Inspections at 100 North King Street handles demolition permits for buildings, and its demolition form asks that footings come out and the site be graded for drainage. A bare slab or walk is usually not a building, but ask before a date is fixed if a carport or garage is coming down with it. The south side of town sits along Mud Creek, where the city is restoring floodplain, so a lot near the creek should check with the county floodplain administrator before any fill goes in.

One number, and what can follow

Two photos and your street are usually enough for a price. The figure covers breaking, loading, hauling and filling the hole, with nothing added afterward for the dump run. For a bigger slab or a tight lot, Jordan comes and looks.

Since he also pours concrete, a tear-out and a new pad or drive can go on one quote; the concrete page shows what he pours, and the guide to concrete driveway cost explains what moves the price. Where the old drive is going back to stone instead, see gravel driveways in Hendersonville.

What it includes

What that covers

  • Patios and walks. Cracked, heaved or tilted toward the house, broken out and hauled.
  • Carport and garage slabs. The pad and the footings under it, out together.
  • Driveways and aprons. Old concrete drives broken up and the base left ready for new.
  • Steps and stoops. Poured steps and porch stoops taken out without wrecking the siding.

Concrete removal runs all through Henderson County from the same base in Tryon, from Flat Rock and Laurel Park out to Etowah and Mills River, and the Hendersonville page lists the other work done in town. Down the mountain the same breaker-and-trailer job is done in Greer and Spartanburg, and the rest of the map, in both states, is on the service area page.

How the work actually goes

You get Jordan. Not a crew he sent.

You call

You call or send two photos. Jordan looks at the job himself, on the ground or from your photos, rather than pricing it off a guess.

A number first

You get one figure before anything starts, with the hauling and the cleanup in it.

He runs the machine

Then he shows up with the machine and the trailer and does the work.

Ground left usable

Voids get filled and the ground gets graded back so you can pour, build, seed or just mow.

Questions about this work

Questions people ask

Not seeing yours? Call (828) 574-4474 and ask Jordan, or read the guides.

Do I need a permit to remove a patio or walk in Hendersonville?

Usually not for a bare slab. Henderson County Permits & Inspections issues demolition permits for buildings, so if a carport or garage is coming down with the slab, call them at 100 North King Street first. Inside city limits, ask the city as well. The photos usually show which case you are in.

Can a machine get into a narrow Hendersonville side yard?

Most of the time. The mini track loader fits through a normal side-yard gap and handles sloped drives. Where steps or a rock wall block it, the concrete gets broken smaller and carried out, and the price reflects that rather than a surprise on the day.

What happens to the hole where the slab was?

It gets filled and graded so water runs away from the house. Hendersonville ground is red clay under a loam topsoil, and a hole left open on a slope becomes a wet spot fast. If you want grass, the top is left ready for topsoil and seed.

My lot is near Mud Creek. Does that change anything?

It can. Land in the mapped floodplain has rules about bringing in fill, and the county floodplain administrator is the one to ask. Taking the concrete out is fine; it is the filling and grading afterward that may need a conversation first.

Can you pour a new driveway after the old one is out?

Yes. Jordan pours driveways, pads and slabs as well as removing them, so the tear-out and the new pour can go on one quote with one trip for the estimate.
