Stump grinding in Campobello: farm ground and fence rows
Campobello is a small town on US-176 between Landrum and Inman, in northern Spartanburg County. SC-11, the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway, crosses just north of town, and I-26 has an exit onto it. From the yard in Tryon it is straight down US-176 through Landrum.
The town itself is a few streets. Around it is farmland: pasture, hay fields and horse properties, with houses on large lots. Stumps here tend to be out in the open. They are in a fence line, at a field edge, around an old home place, or where a yard tree came down in a storm.
Field trees and fence-row trees
A tree that grew in the open on farm ground grows wide, and a wide stump takes longer to grind than a tall one, because the cutting wheel works across the face. Measure across the cut at ground level. That is the number to send.
Fence rows are different. The cedar, cherry and hackberry that come up along an old fence are smaller, but there are usually many of them, and old wire is often grown into the wood. Say so if the tree stood in a fence line. Wire in a stump is worth knowing about before the machine starts, not after.
Getting the machine in
Width is rarely the issue around Campobello. Ground is. Red clay holds water, and a tracked machine on saturated clay marks it. After a wet spell, a few days of drying is worth the wait. On the smaller lots in town the grinder is narrow enough for most yard gates, and a photo of the gate settles it.

Lake Bowen and New Prospect
East of Campobello, off SC-11 near New Prospect, is Lake Bowen. Spartanburg Water owns a buffer of land around the lake. Lakefront owners need a permit from the Lake Bowen Wardens’ Office before changing vegetation or doing work in that buffer. If your stump is near the water, check with the wardens before a date is set. A stump on your own lot above the buffer is ordinary work.
When it is more than stumps
Acreage jobs are often more than one thing. An overgrown fence line may need land clearing before the stumps can be reached. Brush and saplings across a field are a job for forestry mulching. Where there is debris to get rid of, a roll-off dumpster can come from the same yard. It is one crew and one schedule.
What you are left with
The stump is ground to four to eight inches below the ground around it. The grindings are raked back into the hole and topped with soil, left in a pile if you want them, or hauled away. What happens after the stump is ground explains filling, seeding and how the old roots rot down.
What sets the price in Campobello
Campobello is one of the closer towns to the yard, so travel is a small part of the number. On open ground the grinding goes quickly once the machine is set up, so how many stumps you have matters most. The first stump carries the cost of loading, driving and setting up. Each one after it costs far less. What moves the price is written out in full, and the main page on stump grinding in Spartanburg County covers how the work is done.

Asked most often here
Are you local to Campobello?
The yard is in Tryon, North Carolina, just over the state line. Campobello is down US-176 through Landrum, which makes it one of the shorter runs on the map.
Can you grind a whole row of stumps along a fence line?
Yes, and one visit for all of them is the sensible way to do it. Each stump after the first costs far less. Tell us if there is old wire in the stumps.
My lot backs onto Lake Bowen. Can you grind a stump near the water?
On your own lot, yes. Spartanburg Water owns a buffer around the lake, and changes to vegetation inside it need a permit from the Lake Bowen Wardens’ Office. Check with them before you book.
Do you cover Gowensville as well?
Yes. Gowensville does not have its own page, but it is inside the same run and quoted the same way. Inman, the next town down US-176, has a page of its own.
