Concrete Removal in Taylors, SC

Taylors is a community of established subdivisions on half-acre lots, with patios and driveways that went in forty years ago and have moved since. Jordan brings the breaker and the trailer, takes the old concrete out, hauls it off and leaves the ground graded for whatever comes next.

Concrete Removal in Taylors

A town that never became a city, and its forty-year-old concrete

Taylors has about 23,000 people and no city hall. Residents voted incorporation down in 2005, so it remains an unincorporated part of Greenville County along Wade Hampton Boulevard, between Greenville and Greer. It started as a rail stop and a mineral-spring resort at Chick Springs, then grew up around the Southern Bleachery, the mill that is now Taylors Mill.

The housing around it is mostly subdivisions from the sixties through the nineties on lots of half an acre or so. Each one came with a driveway, a walk and usually a back patio, and much of that concrete is now cracked, settled or simply in the way of a new plan.

The back patio that dropped

The most common Taylors call is a patio off the kitchen door that has settled at the far edge and now tilts toward the house. Sometimes it is a single slab, sometimes a patchwork of additions poured over the years with a step between each one. The hydraulic breaker on the mini track loader takes it apart in pieces the grapple can lift.

Everything goes on the trailer and off the property. The void is filled with compacted material rather than loose dirt, so the new patio, the deck or the lawn does not settle the same way the old slab did. Where a shed or a screened porch sits on the slab, the structure comes down with it under the demolition work in Taylors.

Driveways, aprons and widening

A lot of Taylors driveways were poured for one car and a carport. Families now park three, and the old drive has cracked where the extra cars sit on the edge. Breaking out the old drive and pouring a wider one is a single job here, since Jordan does both; the concrete services page shows what he pours.

The apron at the road is the one piece to ask about first. Many Taylors streets are county roads, and the strip between the pavement and your line belongs to the right-of-way. Work on it may need county sign-off, so the usual cut is at the property line until that is settled.

Cecil clay, and the hole that would hold water

Taylors sits on the same Piedmont red clay as the rest of the Upstate: Cecil soil, sandy loam on top and kaolinite clay below. The clay is firm dry, greasy wet, and once it is compacted it does not loosen again. A slab coming out leaves a sealed dish that holds rain.

So the fill and the grade are not an afterthought. The hole is filled in lifts and the top is shaped to fall away from the house, toward wherever the yard already drains. On a lot that is already soggy at the back fence, the drainage work in Taylors goes on the same visit with the same excavator.

The Enoree, Brushy Creek and the county

The Enoree River runs through Taylors, and Greenville County's floodplain office names Brushy Creek among the streams with mapped flood areas. A permit is required for development in those areas, and bringing in fill counts. Removing the concrete is not the problem; the filling afterward is what needs a call to County Square first if the lot is near the water.

With no town government, permits in Taylors come from Greenville County. Building Safety issues demolition permits where a structure is coming down with the slab, and a bare patio or walk usually does not need one. Sewer in much of Taylors is run by the Taylors Fire and Sewer District, which matters when a lateral runs under the slab.

SC811, then one number

A locate request goes to SC811 three full working days before the breaker starts, as South Carolina law requires. Water meters, gas lines and buried power to a shop are the usual finds under an old drive, and the marks decide where the breaker can go.

Two photos and your street get a price from Jordan with hauling and filling in it. Bigger jobs get a visit. For the detail of how a slab is broken, loaded and hauled, the guide to concrete slab removal walks through it, and the demolition page covers the wider tear-down work.

What it includes

What that covers

  • Settled patios. Tilted, cracked or patched slabs off the back door, out and filled.
  • One-car driveways. Old drives broken out ahead of a wider pour or a gravel drive.
  • Walks and steps. Front walks, stoops and poured steps that have heaved.
  • Shed and carport pads. Pads and footings out, with the building if it is going too.

Taylors and the towns nearby

Taylors is at the Greenville end of the route from Tryon, so a patio with a new pour behind it, or a driveway with drainage work on the same lot, makes the best use of the trip. The Taylors page lists the other work done here. The same concrete removal runs along Wade Hampton into Greer and down into Greenville, and the service area page has the rest of the map.

How the work actually goes

You get Jordan. Not a crew he sent.

You call

You call or send two photos. Jordan looks at the job himself, on the ground or from your photos, rather than pricing it off a guess.

A number first

You get one figure before anything starts, with the hauling and the cleanup in it.

He runs the machine

Then he shows up with the machine and the trailer and does the work.

Ground left usable

Voids get filled and the ground gets graded back so you can pour, build, seed or just mow.

Questions about this work

Questions people ask

Not seeing yours? Call (828) 574-4474 and ask Jordan, or read the guides.

Who issues permits for concrete work in Taylors, since there is no town?

Greenville County. Taylors is unincorporated, so building and demolition permits come from the county's Building Safety office, and floodplain questions go to the county's floodplain office at County Square. A bare patio or walk usually needs no permit. A slab under a shed or carport that is coming down may.

My patio is in three pieces poured at different times. Does that change the price?

Not much. Patched patios are common in Taylors and the breaker does not care how many pours there were. What moves the price is total area, thickness, any footings underneath and how far the pieces have to travel to the trailer.

Can you widen my driveway after you take the old one out?

Yes. Jordan pours driveways as well as removing them, so the tear-out and the wider new drive go on one quote. If the drive is going to gravel instead, that is the same machine on the same day.

My lot backs up to Brushy Creek. Is that a problem?

It can be for the filling, not the removal. Greenville County wants a permit for development in a mapped flood area, and fill counts. Call the county floodplain office with your address before a date is set, and the work is planned around what they say.
