Stump Grinder Rental vs Hiring It Done: Which Makes Sense?

By JB Stump Grinding & Land Management. Updated October 2026.

Renting a stump grinder makes sense when you have a few small or medium stumps, open access, a way to haul the machine and a free day. Hiring it done makes more sense for one large or wide-flared stump, a stump behind a gate or on a slope, or any job where your time, the cleanup and the risk are worth more than the difference in cost.

The honest short answer

Plenty of people rent a grinder and do a good job with it. The work is not complicated. It is slow, loud and dusty, and how it goes depends on the stump more than on you. Softwood stumps the width of a dinner plate, out in the open, are a fair weekend project. A wide hardwood stump with roots running along the surface is a different day. So before choosing, look hard at what you have: how wide across the cut face, how many, what kind of tree, and what the machine has to get past to reach it. Those four things decide this question, the same way they decide a quote.

What a rental stump grinder is

Rental counters mostly stock compact machines: walk-behind grinders you steer by the handlebars, and at some shops a towable unit that rides behind a truck. They are built to be light enough to load and simple enough to learn in a parking lot. The cutting wheel is smaller and so is the engine, so the stump comes down in thin passes, a little at a time, with you swinging or pushing the machine across the face. That is fine. It simply means the work is measured in hours where a bigger machine measures it in minutes, and the gap widens fast as the stump gets wider.

What a tracked commercial grinder does differently

A commercial stump grinding service turns up with a heavier machine. Ours is a Carlton tracked stump grinder. It drives itself to the stump on tracks, it is narrow enough for standard yard gates, and its weight and power keep the wheel working in dense wood where a light machine bounces. It takes a stump down in passes to below grade, usually four to eight inches under, and deeper where turf or planting is going on top. Tracks also spread the weight, so a firm lawn is left with very little marking. The person at the controls grinds stumps for a living, which counts for as much as the machine does.

When renting makes sense

Renting fits when most of these are true. The stumps are small or medium and there are several, so one rental period covers them all. They are pine or another softwood, or old enough to have gone soft. They sit in open ground with nothing fragile close by. You have a truck or a hitch that can move the machine, and someone to help load it. You are comfortable running loud power equipment for a day. And you do not mind the cleanup: raking a pile of grindings bigger than you expect, filling the hole and getting the machine back on time.

When hiring it done makes sense

Hiring fits the stumps a small machine struggles with. One wide stump, especially oak, hickory or another dense hardwood, is the classic case, and large stump grinding is a job of its own. So is a stump with a broad root flare or roots at the surface. So is anything with awkward access: a back yard gate, a side yard, a slope, a stump beside a foundation, a drive or a fence. A machine built for tight access stump grinding gets through places a towable unit cannot. And hiring fits when you simply have one stump and no wish to spend a Saturday on it.

The costs people forget on a rental

The rental rate is one line. The rest is easy to miss. The clock runs from the counter, so loading, driving and learning the controls all come out of your grinding time. You need a vehicle that can carry or tow the machine. Fuel is yours. Ask the shop how it handles worn or broken teeth, because rocks and old fence wire in a stump are hard on them. Then there is the cleanup, the soil to fill the hole, and your day. Add those up before you compare. A second stump that will not fit in the rental period means a second rental.

Safety and buried lines, whichever way you go

A grinder throws chips and stones, and it cuts whatever is under the stump. Contact 811 before grinding so the public utility lines get located. It is free. 811 does not mark private lines, so find your own irrigation pipe, low-voltage lighting cable, invisible dog fence and septic parts before the wheel starts. Wear eye and ear protection, keep children, pets and cars well back, and screen windows that face the work. Iowa State University Extension says the quickest, easiest and safest way to remove a stump is to hire a professional to grind it out. That is not a reason never to rent. It is a reason to take the day seriously.

How to compare the two fairly

Get both numbers before you decide. Ask the rental counter for the rate that covers the hours you will really need, including pickup and return. Then get a grinding quote for the same stumps. Ours comes from two photos and your town, and what moves the price of stump grinding is laid out on its own page: width across the cut face, how many stumps, access, depth and whether the grindings stay. With both in hand the choice is usually obvious. Sometimes renting wins. For a single big stump it rarely does once the day is counted.

Common Questions

Is renting a stump grinder worth it for one stump?

For one small softwood stump in open ground, it can be. For one wide hardwood stump it rarely is, because a compact rental machine takes it down in thin passes and the hours add up. Compare the rental for the time you will need against a grinding quote before you book either.

Can a rental stump grinder handle a big oak stump?

It can chew at one, slowly. Rental machines are light and take shallow cuts, so a wide oak stump with a root flare can fill most of a day and wear out the person running it. A heavier tracked grinder holds its wheel in dense wood and finishes far sooner.

What do I need to rent and run a stump grinder myself?

A truck or hitch that can move the machine, help loading it, eye and ear protection, sturdy boots and gloves, and a rake and shovel for the grindings. Contact 811 before you start, mark your own private lines, and ask the rental shop to show you the controls before you leave.
