Polk County, North Carolina

Stump Grinding and Removal Across Polk County

Polk is the fifth-smallest county in North Carolina, and it fits two kinds of ground into that space. The western third is Blue Ridge: Saluda, Tryon Peak, the Green River gorge, steep wooded lots. The eastern two-thirds is Piedmont: rolling pasture, red clay and horse farms around Mill Spring and Green Creek. Elevation runs from under 800 feet down on the Green River to more than 3,200 on Tryon Peak. A stump job at one end of the county looks nothing like a stump job at the other.

JB Stump Grinding & Land Management is based in Tryon, so every corner of Polk County is close to home. The work is stump grinding and stump removal first. A tracked Carlton stump grinder that fits standard yard gates works the stump down in passes to below grade, and the grindings are raked back into the hole or hauled off. Jordan quotes every job himself, usually from two photos and the name of your road: the stump with something beside it for scale, and the way in.

Polk County towns and communities

Tryon is the base and the largest town: hillside yards above Trade Street, with horse farms outside it. Columbus is the county seat, strung along NC-108 where I-26 meets US-74. Saluda sits about a thousand feet higher, where the Saluda Grade tops out, and a little of it lies in Henderson County. Mill Spring is the crossroads of NC-9 and NC-108, near Lake Adger and the Tryon International Equestrian Center. Lynn, on NC-108 between Tryon and Columbus, Green Creek to the south and Sunny View to the north are covered the same way.

The trees here, and what is bringing them down

Polk County lies in the thermal belt, where the slopes stay milder than the valley floors on still nights, so frost comes less often and the growing season runs longer. Trees do well and get large. Tulip poplar is the obvious one: N.C. State Extension calls it fast growing and weak wooded, quick to lose limbs in wind and ice. Up the mountain it is hemlock. The N.C. Forest Service found hemlock woolly adelgid in every mountain county by 2007, and infested hemlocks usually die within a few years. The Forest Service also lists Polk County as positive for emerald ash borer, which kills ash.

The stump jobs that come up in Polk County

Four kinds, mostly. Hillside yards in Tryon and Saluda, where the stump is behind the house and the only way in is a side yard or a gate. Pasture and fence line stumps on horse ground, where a stump in a paddock is a hazard and not just an eyesore. Wooded lots around Lake Adger. And storm work: Helene, in September 2024, damaged an estimated 822,000 acres of timberland across western North Carolina, and a tree that blows over leaves a root plate, which the loader and excavator lift out whole.

Who grinds stumps in Polk County, NC?

JB Stump Grinding & Land Management does. The business is based in Tryon and grinds and removes tree stumps across Polk County: Tryon, Columbus, Saluda, Mill Spring, Lynn, Green Creek and Sunny View. Jordan, the owner, quotes every job himself. Call (828) 574-4474 or send two photos and the name of your community for a free estimate.

Will you come out for a single stump anywhere in Polk County?

Yes. The yard is in Tryon, so the whole county is close to home and one stump stands on its own as a job. If you have more than one, or a neighbor has a stump too, say so. Loading and setting up happen once, so several stumps in one visit cost less per stump than the same stumps done separately.

Who do I check with before a stump is ground in Polk County?

It depends where the stump sits. Inside town limits, ask the Town of Tryon, the Town of Columbus or the City of Saluda about anything in a street right-of-way. Outside them, the Polk County planning office is the place to start, and the N.C. Department of Transportation looks after state road frontage. In a subdivision or on a lake lot, check with your owners' association as well, if there is one.

Which trees are dying and leaving stumps in Polk County?

Hemlock and ash are the two with a named cause. Hemlock woolly adelgid has been in every North Carolina mountain county for years, and the N.C. Forest Service lists Polk County as positive for emerald ash borer. Add old poplars and oaks lost to wind. Tree still standing in your Polk County yard? Call or send a photo, and we can talk over the options.

How it works

How a Job Runs

Send two photos

One of the stump with something for scale, one of the way in, plus your town. Call, use the form, or email the photos.

Get your quote

Jordan quotes every job himself. Estimates are free, and you have the number before any work starts.

Lines get marked

Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them. 811 does not mark private lines, so point out irrigation, lighting, invisible fence and septic parts.

The grind

The stump is ground in passes to below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Tell us first if you are planting or laying turf and it goes deeper.

Clean ground

Grindings are raked back into the hole and topped, left in a pile for your beds, or hauled off. Any marks on the lawn get raked.
