Spartanburg County, South Carolina

Stump Grinding and Removal Across Spartanburg County

Cross the state line on US-176 below Tryon and you are in Spartanburg County, at Landrum. From there the county runs south and east across the Piedmont: farms and fence lines at the top, old peach and cotton ground around Inman, subdivisions at Boiling Springs, then the city of Spartanburg and the I-85 corridor. It is the fifth most populous county in South Carolina. That means new lots cut out of woods at one end and mature yard trees reaching the end of their lives at the other.

How far one stump travels depends on where you are. Landrum and Campobello are close to home, and a single stump is worth the trip. Inman, Chesnee and Boiling Springs are inside the normal area. In Spartanburg itself, Duncan and Wellford, jobs are easiest to book alongside other work in the same area, and several stumps make more sense than one. Big stumps, tight access, builder lots, or stump work that runs into clearing or grading are where the trip is worth it. For a single small stump there, send a photo and Jordan will tell you how it can fit in with other work nearby.

Spartanburg County towns, north to south

Landrum is the first town over the line, where US-176 meets SC-14. Campobello sits on the South Pacolet River with SC-11 across its north side. Inman was a peach and mill town. Chesnee holds the northeast corner, where US-221 crosses SC-11. Boiling Springs, on SC-9, more than doubled in population between 2000 and 2020. The county seat has its own page: stump grinding in the city of Spartanburg. Duncan and Wellford, toward I-85, have pages too, and Lyman and Cowpens are covered.

Red clay, water oak and Bradford pear

This is Piedmont ground, and over most of it that means topsoil over red clay. The clay matters after rain, because soft ground is worth waiting out and tracks mark it less when it is firm. Two yard trees fill a lot of the stump list. Water oak is common across the Piedmont, and N.C. State Extension says it may live only thirty to fifty years and is weaker wooded than most oaks. Bradford pear is worse: Clemson Extension says its narrow branch angles split in wind and ice, mostly in trees fifteen years and older, and it is on South Carolina's invasive list.

What gets called in from Spartanburg County

New subdivisions bring builder lots, where stumps sit under a future drive or footing and have to come out whole, and buried construction stumps that surface years later as a sunken spot in the lawn. Older streets bring one wide stump hard against a fence or a drive. Farms at the north end bring fence rows. Lake lots are their own case: on Lake Bowen, Spartanburg Water owns the lake and a buffer of shoreline around it, and adjoining owners go through its permit process before changing vegetation in that buffer, so ask them first.

Who grinds stumps in northern Spartanburg County near the state line?

JB Stump Grinding & Land Management is based in Tryon, North Carolina, just over the line from Landrum, and grinds and removes stumps across northern Spartanburg County: Landrum, Campobello, Inman, Chesnee and Boiling Springs. One stump is worth the trip in Landrum and Campobello. Call (828) 574-4474, or send two photos with the name of your town.

Do you grind stumps in the city of Spartanburg or only in the north of the county?

Both. The north of the county is closer, so small jobs are simple there. In the city, Duncan and Wellford, a job fits most easily next to other work in the same area, and a batch of stumps makes more sense than a single one. Big stumps, tight back yards, builder lots and stump work that leads into clearing or grading are the jobs worth calling about.

Do I need permission to remove a stump beside Lake Bowen?

Ask Spartanburg Water before anything is touched. It owns the lake and a buffer of shoreline around it, and its rules say adjoining owners go through a permit process before changing natural vegetation in that buffer. A stump on your own lot above the buffer is a different matter, but check where the buffer line runs first. That answer has to come from Spartanburg Water.

Will a tracked stump grinder tear up a red clay yard in Spartanburg County?

On firm ground it leaves very little. Tracks spread the machine's weight better than wheels, and any marks are raked out at the end. Wet clay is the exception: after heavy rain it is worth waiting a few dry days. Matting goes down to protect a driveway, and the stump is ground where it stands, so the lawn around it is not dug up.

How it works

How a Job Runs

Send two photos

One of the stump with something for scale, one of the way in, plus your town. Call, use the form, or email the photos.

Get your quote

Jordan quotes every job himself. Estimates are free, and you have the number before any work starts.

Lines get marked

Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them. 811 does not mark private lines, so point out irrigation, lighting, invisible fence and septic parts.

The grind

The stump is ground in passes to below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Tell us first if you are planting or laying turf and it goes deeper.

Clean ground

Grindings are raked back into the hole and topped, left in a pile for your beds, or hauled off. Any marks on the lawn get raked.
