Grinding and Removing Stumps in Green Creek, NC
NC 9 starts at the South Carolina line just south of Green Creek, where it carries on as SC 9. The North Carolina Gazetteer puts the township in the southeast corner of Polk County and lists a stream there, spelled Greens Creek, that runs northeast into White Oak Creek. This is the Piedmont end of the county. The ground rolls instead of climbing, the fields are cut for hay, and red clay sits under a thin layer of topsoil.
Green Creek is close to home for us. The yard is in Tryon, so one stump by itself is worth the drive over. We grind with a Carlton tracked grinder, taking the wood down in passes until it sits below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Nothing gets pulled, so the sod around the stump stays where it is. The chips go back in the hole and get topped, stay in a pile for you, or get hauled off. The stump grinding page has the full method.
Hay ground and field edges
NCpedia lists corn, hay, soybeans, apples and peaches as what Polk County farms grow, and around Green Creek a lot of the open ground goes for hay. A stump in a hay field is a problem every time the mower comes round, and the old ones are easy to miss in tall grass until a blade finds them. Grinding takes the stump below the reach of the cutter and leaves the field flat. Our page on pasture and fence-line stump grinding covers the wider job.
Red clay, wet and dry
Red clay behaves two ways. Dry, it is hard enough that a tracked machine hardly marks it. After a wet week it turns slick and soft, and tracks can rut it. If your ground is soaked, a few dry days make for a cleaner finish in Green Creek, and you will hear that before a date is set. When the chips go back into a clay hole, a cap of soil on top helps the spot settle evenly. More in stump grinding in red clay.
Wire, posts and lines you know about
Fence rows are where farm stumps hide. A sapling came up in the wire, somebody cut it years later, and the stump kept the wire. Tell us about wire, staples or old posts you know are in or near a stump, because steel and a cutting wheel do not get along. Public utility lines are marked through 811 before grinding near them. Your own lines are not: a water line to a trough, a buried feed to a barn, a septic line. Point those out. Tree still standing? Send a photo and we will talk it over.

Green Creek Stump Questions
The big questions each have a full guide. Shorter answers are on the FAQ page.
I only have one stump in Green Creek. Is that worth a call, or should I wait for more?
Call now. Green Creek is close to home, so a single stump does not need company to make the trip sensible. If a neighbor has stumps too, put them on the same visit, because the loading and setup get shared. Snap the stump with a boot or a tape beside it, snap the route a machine would take, add your road name, and Jordan can price it from that.
There is old barbed wire grown into a stump on our Green Creek fence line. Can it still be ground?
Often, yes. Cut away the wire you can see, pull any loose staples, and mention it when you send photos. Wire buried inside the wood is the real risk to the cutting wheel, so say if you suspect it. Where a stump is full of old metal, lifting it out whole with the loader or the excavator is the other way to deal with it.
Can you clear brush and saplings off Green Creek pasture as well as grind the stumps?
Yes. Clearing overgrown ground is part of the work, and pasture that has grown up in brush nearly always hides a few stumps too. Send photos of the area and say what it should be when it is done: hay ground, a paddock or a clear fence line. Elsewhere in the county? See stumps across Polk County.

Lines get marked
Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them. 811 does not mark private lines, so point out irrigation, lighting, invisible fence and septic parts.
The grind
The stump is ground in passes to below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Tell us first if you are planting or laying turf and it goes deeper.
Clean ground
Grindings are raked back into the hole and topped, left in a pile for your beds, or hauled off. Any marks on the lawn get raked.
