JB Stump Grinding & Land Management

Four things set the price

Diameter. Measured across the cut face at ground level. This is the single biggest factor, and it is not the same as how tall the stump is.

How many. The first stump carries the cost of loading, travelling and setting up. The second and third are much cheaper. Batch them.

Access. Whether the machine can reach the stump, and what it has to get past to do it. Gates, slopes, soft ground, patios, boundaries. This is why a photo of the way in is worth more than a paragraph describing it.

The grindings. Raked back into the hole and topped with soil, or loaded and hauled away. Hauling costs more because it is another machine movement and a tipping fee.

What customers say about the price

Google attaches its own price rating to a business based on what reviewers report. JB’s reads “Great price.” The reviews say it in their own words — “very fair and reasonable,” “professional, courteous and affordable.” That is customers talking, not marketing.

How to get a real number quickly

Email two photos to jbdumpsters@outlook.com: one of the stump with something for scale beside it, and one of the route the machine would take in. Add roughly how many you have and your town. Most quotes come back the same day.

Pricing questions

The ones people actually ask

What does it cost to grind one stump?

There is no honest single number, and anybody who gives you one over the phone without asking questions is guessing. The four things that move it are diameter, how many you have, how hard the machine is to get to it, and whether the grindings stay or go. A single accessible stump in an open front garden and one wedged behind a fence with a patio in the way are different jobs at the same diameter.

Why is diameter what matters, not height?

Because grinding is volume of wood removed, and the cutting wheel works across the face of the stump. A tall stump is quick to reduce; a wide one is not. Measure across the cut face at ground level — that is the number worth telling us.

Does more than one stump make it cheaper?

Per stump, yes, usually noticeably. Most of the cost of a small job is getting the machine loaded, driven, unloaded and set up. Once it is on site and running, each additional stump costs far less than the first. If you have several, get them all done in one visit.

Is it cheaper to grind or to remove?

Grinding is cheaper, and for most garden stumps it is also the right answer. Removal means excavating the whole root ball, which is a bigger machine, a bigger hole and backfill afterwards. Pay for removal when something is going to be dug, built or planted where the stump was — not otherwise.

Do I pay extra to have the grindings taken away?

Hauling costs more than raking back, because it means loading and tipping. Most people have the grindings raked into the hole and topped with soil, which is included. Say which you want when you book so the quote reflects it.

Do you charge for the estimate?

No. Estimates are free, and for most jobs a couple of clear photos — the stump, and the way in — are enough to give you a real number without anyone driving out.
