Large Stump Grinding: Big Hardwood Stumps and Wide Root Flares
A big stump is the one other quotes come back high on, or do not come back on at all. JB grinds large hardwood and pine stumps below grade, root flare and all, and takes out whole the few that are past grinding.
Large Stumps: What the Job Involves
Big trees leave big stumps, and a big stump is wider than it looks. The trunk may have been three feet through, but the root flare spreads out where it meets the ground, and the flare is what has to be ground. Measure across the cut face at ground level, flare included. That number, not the height, is what makes a stump large. A tall stump is quick to take down. A wide one is a lot of wood to turn into chips.
The Carlton grinder works a large stump the same way it works a small one, only for longer. The wheel sweeps across the face and takes it down in passes until the whole thing is below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Large hardwood stumps, old stumps that have been in the ground for years and big pines are all work JB takes on. How big a stump can be ground? Bigger than most people expect.
If a stump is too big to make sense as a grinding job, it comes out whole with the excavator instead, and you are told that before any work starts. Either way the answer starts with a photo. Big stumps are a good reason to call from anywhere in the area, and close to home, around Tryon, one large stump is a job on its own. The general page on stump grinding covers the basics.

What large stump grinding includes
- Whole root flare ground, not just the trunk
- Ground four to eight inches below grade
- Deeper passes where turf or planting follows
- The large pile of grindings dealt with
- Matting where the machine crosses a driveway
- Removal whole if grinding makes no sense
Why width is the number that matters
Grinding is a matter of how much wood has to be removed, and the wheel works across the face of the stump. Double the width and there is far more than double the wood. That is why the quote asks for the measurement across the cut face at ground level, at the widest point, with the flare. Lay a tape or a shovel across it and take the photo from above. If the stump was cut high, say how high. The short guide on how to measure a stump for a quote shows where to put the tape so the number is right the first time.
What a big stump leaves behind
A large stump makes a surprising amount of grindings. Solid wood takes up much more room as loose chips, so the mound is always bigger than the stump was, and with a big hardwood it can cover a fair patch of lawn. Decide ahead of time what you want. By default the grindings are raked back into the hole and topped off, and with a big stump there will be more than the hole holds. The rest can be left in a pile for beds and paths or hauled off, which is quoted separately. Say which when you ask for the quote.
Time, species and getting there
A large stump takes longer than a small one, and how much longer depends on the wood. Species and age both count. A fresh hardwood stump is harder going than a soft or half-rotted one of the same width. The guide on how long stump grinding takes explains what speeds a job up and slows it down. Access still matters. The grinder fits standard yard gates, so a big stump in a back yard is reachable more often than people think. Roots that run across the lawn from the stump are worth a photo too.

Large Stumps Questions
Not seeing yours? Call (828) 574-4474 and ask Jordan, or read the common questions.
Is there a stump too big for a stump grinder?
Rarely. The grinder takes a stump down in passes, so a big one mostly means more passes and more time. If a stump is so large that grinding stops making sense, the excavator lifts it out whole instead. You will be told which it is from the photos, before anyone loads a machine.
How do I measure a big stump that has a wide root flare?
Measure across the cut face at ground level, at the widest point, and include the flare where the stump spreads out into the roots. Ignore the height. Lay a tape, a shovel or a five-gallon bucket on it for scale and take the photo from above. That one picture answers most of what a quote needs.
How long does a very large hardwood stump take to grind?
Longer than a small one, and it depends on width, species and how fresh the wood is. Jordan can give you a fair idea from a photo. For most big stumps the grinding is still a visit, not a project. Getting the machine beside the stump and dealing with the grindings afterwards are the other parts of the clock.
How big a pile of grindings does a large stump make?
Bigger than the stump. Chips are loose, so the same wood takes up far more room, and soil gets mixed in as the wheel goes below grade. A large stump can leave more grindings than the hole will hold. They can be raked back, left in a pile for beds, or hauled off, which is quoted separately.
Big roots run across the lawn from the stump. What about those?
Send a photo that shows them along with the stump. The root flare is ground as part of the stump. Roots that run further out across the lawn are a separate question, and what makes sense depends on how far they go and what you want the lawn to do. Call or send the photo and we will talk through the options.

The stump is ground in passes to below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Tell us first if you are planting or laying turf and it goes deeper.
Clean ground
Grindings are raked back into the hole and topped, left in a pile for your beds, or hauled off. Any marks on the lawn get raked.
