JB Stump Grinding & Land Management

Stump grinding in Mill Spring is mostly acreage work

Mill Spring is not a town with a main street. It is a crossroads east of Columbus, where NC-9 meets NC-108, with farms, horse properties and wooded home sites spread out for miles around it. Most stumps here are not behind a yard gate. They are along a pasture fence, beside a barn, at the edge of a hay field, or in a home site that was cut out of the woods.

Tryon International Equestrian Center is in Mill Spring, and a lot of the ground around it is horse country. On a horse property a stump is more than something to look at. A stump in a paddock or beside a riding path is something a horse can catch a leg on. Those are the jobs where it pays to have every stump along a fence line done in one visit.

Two kinds of ground in one community

South of NC-108, toward Green Creek, the land is rolling: open pasture, red clay and room to take a machine straight to the stump. North of the crossroads, NC-9 climbs toward Sunny View and Lake Lure, and the lots get steeper and more wooded. Around Lake Adger, where the Green River is dammed, many homes sit on sloping wooded lots above the water with a long drive down to them.

The stump is the same job in both places. What changes is how the machine gets to it.

Getting the machine in

The grinder runs on tracks and is narrow, so a farm gate is never the problem. On open ground the question is whether the ground will carry the machine. Low pasture corners and bottom land near the Green River stay soft for days after rain, and a tracked machine on saturated ground marks it. If it has been wet, waiting a few days is usually the right call.

On the sloping lots north of the crossroads the question is the route: how steep it is, how far the stump is from where a truck and trailer can park, and what sits below it. A photo from the drive and one of the stump answer most of that.

Wells, septic and buried lines

Out here most properties run on a well and a septic system, and many have power buried out to a barn or a gate. Those are private lines. The 811 locating service marks the lines that utilities own. It does not mark yours. If a stump is near a well line, a septic tank, a drain field or a buried cable, say so and mark it if you can.

What happens to the stump and the chips

The stump is ground to four to eight inches below the ground around it, deeper if turf or planting is going on top. The grindings can be raked back into the hole and topped with soil, left in a pile for you to use, or hauled away. On a farm there is usually somewhere to use them. What happens after the stump is ground explains each choice.

If a barn footing, a fence post or a shed pad is going where the stump stood, grinding is not enough, because the roots stay in the ground. The loader or the excavator lifts the root ball out whole. New home sites often need land clearing first, and it is the same crew.

What sets the price in Mill Spring

Travel is a small part of the number this close to the yard. The rest is the stump: how wide it is across the cut face, how many there are, how easy they are to reach, and whether the grindings stay or go. Several stumps in one visit cost far less per stump than the same stumps done one at a time. What moves the price is written out in full, and the main page on stump grinding and stump removal covers how the work is done.

Asked most often here

Do you grind stumps on horse farms around Mill Spring?

Yes. Fence lines, paddock corners and pasture edges are routine stump work in Polk County. Tell us if horses are on that ground, so the day can be planned around moving them.

Can you reach a stump on a sloping lot near Lake Adger?

Often. It comes down to how steep the lot is and what sits below the stump. Send a photo from the drive and one from below the stump looking up. If it is not a job the machine should do, you will be told that plainly.

Is one stump enough to bring the machine out?

Yes. Mill Spring is in the same county as the yard in Tryon, so a single stump stands on its own here. Several stumps in one visit still cost less per stump.

Do I need a permit to grind a stump in Mill Spring?

For a stump on your own land, generally not. Mill Spring is not an incorporated town, so questions go to Polk County. If the stump is in a road right-of-way, in an easement or on ground a lake or owners’ association controls, check with the county planning office or the association first. We are not able to give that answer for you.
