Full Stump Removal: The Root Ball Lifted Out Whole

When something is going to be built, dug or planted where the stump stood, grinding is not enough. The excavator or the loader lifts the stump and root ball out whole, it leaves on a trailer, and the hole is backfilled.

Full Stump Removal: What the Job Involves

Grinding and full stump removal are two different jobs. Grinding takes the stump below grade and leaves the root system in the ground to rot down over the years. Under grass, that is all a yard needs. It stops being enough the day something has to sit on that spot or go down into it: a footing, a fence or deck post, a slab, a drain line, a pool. A replacement tree planted in the same hole is the other common reason. Then the wood has to leave the ground.

Removal means a bigger machine. The excavator, or the Bobcat track loader with a grapple for smaller root balls, digs around the stump, breaks it free and lifts the root ball out in one piece. It goes on a trailer and leaves the property. What stays behind is an open hole and some disturbed ground around it. The hole is backfilled, and backfill needs time to settle before it is trusted to hold anything up.

For most yard stumps, stump grinding is the right answer and the smaller job, and you will be told so. Removal is for the cases that need it. The work covers Western North Carolina and Upstate South Carolina from Tryon, including builders and homeowners looking for stump removal in Hendersonville. Tell Jordan what is going where the stump was. That one sentence usually settles which job it is.

What it includes

What full stump removal includes

  • Stump and root ball lifted out whole
  • Excavator or track loader with a grapple
  • Root ball loaded and hauled off the property
  • Hole backfilled once the root ball is out
  • Public lines located through 811 before digging
  • A free quote from two photos

When a stump has to come out whole

Ask one question: is anything going on this exact spot? If the answer is grass, mulch or a flower bed, grind it. If the answer is a footing, a post, a slab, a drain, a pool or a new tree, the root ball needs to come out, because buried wood rots and the ground above it sinks as it goes. Old stumps that have sat for years, storm root plates and buried construction stumps found during site work also come out this way. The full comparison is in the guide to stump grinding vs stump removal, which walks through both jobs side by side.

What removal leaves behind

Expect a hole wider than the stump was, because the root ball comes with it. Expect tracked ground around it too, since an excavator needs room to work that a grinder does not. The hole is backfilled once the root ball is gone. Loose fill settles, so the spot may want topping up later, and anything structural going on top should wait for whatever your builder calls ready. If the plan is a pad, a drive or a regraded yard, that can be quoted with the removal as part of grading and excavation work, so one machine visit covers both.

Getting a quote for stump removal

The quote needs a little more than a grinding quote does. Send a photo of the stump with something beside it for scale, a photo of the way in, and one line about what is planned for the spot. Access matters more here, because the excavator needs a wider path than the grinder and firmer ground to cross. Public utility lines are located through 811 before digging near them. 811 does not mark private lines, so point out irrigation, lighting cable, invisible fence and anything septic. Jordan quotes every job himself, the estimate is free, and the number is agreed before the work.

When do I need full stump removal instead of stump grinding?

When something is being built, dug or planted on the exact spot. Footings, fence and deck posts, slabs, drain lines, pools and a replacement tree in the same hole are the usual reasons. If the spot is going back to lawn, mulch or a bed, grinding below grade does the job and leaves far less to put right afterwards.

How big a hole does pulling a stump and root ball leave?

Bigger than the stump looked. The root ball comes out with the stump, so the hole is wider than the cut face and has ragged sides where roots broke off. How big depends on the tree and the soil. The hole is backfilled once the root ball is out, and the fill settles over time.

Can I pour concrete or set posts right after a stump is removed?

Tell Jordan what is going there before the work, because it changes how the hole is handled. Backfill needs to settle or be compacted before it carries weight, and your builder or engineer sets the standard for a footing or a slab. Pads, drives and concrete flatwork can be quoted alongside the removal if you want one job instead of three.

Where do the stump and root ball go once they are out?

They leave on a trailer. A whole root ball is heavy, full of soil and awkward to get rid of, which is a large part of why removal is the bigger job. You are not left with it at the curb. Ask Jordan to confirm the quote covers the stump leaving the property, so the number you agree to is the whole job.

Can the excavator reach a stump in my back yard?

Maybe. An excavator needs a wider way in than the stump grinder and it is harder on soft ground. Send a photo of the route from the street to the stump. If the big machine cannot get there, grinding the stump deeper and wider is sometimes enough for what you have planned, and you will be told which.

How it works

How a Job Runs

Send two photos

One of the stump with something for scale, one of the way in, plus your town. Call, use the form, or email the photos.

Get your quote

Jordan quotes every job himself. Estimates are free, and you have the number before any work starts.

Lines get marked

Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them. 811 does not mark private lines, so point out irrigation, lighting, invisible fence and septic parts.

The grind

The stump is ground in passes to below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Tell us first if you are planting or laying turf and it goes deeper.

Clean ground

Grindings are raked back into the hole and topped, left in a pile for your beds, or hauled off. Any marks on the lawn get raked.
