Tight-Access Stump Grinding: Gates, Side Yards, Fences and Slopes

Most stumps are somewhere awkward: behind a gate, down a side yard, against a patio or a foundation. JB's tracked Carlton grinder is narrow enough for standard yard gates, so the stump you thought nobody could reach usually can be.

Tight Access

Tight Access: What the Job Involves

Behind a fence. Down the side of the house. In a gated back yard with a patio on one side and the property line on the other. That is where yard stumps live, and it is why a lot of quotes come back high or never come back. A truck-mounted or tow-behind machine cannot get there. The grinder JB runs is a Carlton on tracks, and it is narrow. Standard yard gates are wide enough, and so are most side yards.

If you are not sure it will fit, measure the narrowest point on the way in. That is usually the gap between the gate posts, sometimes an air conditioner or a chimney on the side of the house. Send that number with a photo of the route and you get a straight answer before anyone drives out. Where a gate is unusually tight, a fence panel sometimes has to come out and go back. You are asked first, never told afterwards.

Tight access is one of the strongest reasons to call from the far side of the area. In Spartanburg, for example, the awkward stump behind the fence is where this machine is worth the call. For a single small stump out there, send a photo and we will tell you how we can fit it in with other work nearby. The grinding itself is the same as on any other job, and it is explained on the main stump grinding page. Getting to it is most of the job here.

What it includes

What tight-access grinding includes

  • Narrow tracked grinder through standard yard gates
  • A straight answer on access from a photo
  • Matting to protect driveways and paved paths
  • Track marks on the lawn raked out
  • Fence panel out and back only if agreed
  • Grindings raked back, piled or hauled off

Gates, side yards and fences

The route matters as much as the stump. Walk it the way the machine will: from where a truck and trailer can park, across the drive, through the gate, along the side yard, to the stump. Take a photo at each pinch point. Gate posts are the usual one. Steps, a retaining wall, a heat pump or a low deck are the others. Matting goes down to protect a driveway. The tracks spread the weight, so a firm lawn shows very little, and what does show gets raked. Soft, wet ground is worth waiting out, and you will hear that plainly.

Patios, driveways and foundations

Stumps end up against hard edges because trees get planted too close to them. A stump beside a patio, a driveway or the house wall can still be ground. The wheel takes the stump and the root flare down below grade, and the roots that run under the concrete stay where they are and rot in place. Say what the hard edge is, and send a close photo of the gap between it and the stump. Thinking about doing it yourself? Read stump grinder rental vs hiring it done first, because a tight corner beside a wall is a hard place to learn a rented machine.

Slopes, soft ground and buried lines

A stump on a bank or a steep back yard is slower work, and the question is footing for the machine. Send a photo taken from the side so the slope shows, and you get an honest answer before anyone turns up. On a slope, loose grindings should not be left where heavy rain can carry them downhill, so plan on raking them back or hauling them. Back yards are also where the private lines are. Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them. 811 does not mark irrigation, low-voltage lighting, invisible fence or septic parts, so point those out.

Will a stump grinder fit through a standard back yard gate?

This one usually does. The grinder is tracked and narrow, and standard yard gates are normally wide enough. Measure between the gate posts at the narrowest point, check for anything else that pinches the route, and send the number with a photo. You get a straight yes or no before anyone drives out.

Does a fence panel have to come out to reach my stump?

Usually not. Where a gate is unusually tight, a panel sometimes has to come out and go back so the machine can pass. If that looks likely from your photos, you are asked first and it is agreed before the day. Nothing on a fence gets taken apart as a surprise.

Can a stump right next to a house foundation or a driveway be ground?

Yes, stumps against foundations, patios and drives are common work. The stump and its root flare are ground below grade. Roots that run under the slab or the footing stay in place and rot down. Send a close photo that shows the gap between the stump and the hard edge, and say what is on the other side of the wall.

Can a stump on a steep bank or a sloped back yard be ground?

Often, yes. It is slower than flat ground because the machine has to be placed with care, and it is more time on site. Send a photo from the side that shows how steep the slope is and what is below it. You will get a plain answer from the photo, and a plan for the grindings so rain does not move them.

The stump sits over my irrigation and invisible dog fence. Now what?

Say so before the work and show where the lines run if you know. Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them, but 811 does not mark private lines like irrigation, lighting cable, invisible fence or septic parts. A wire or a pipe that crosses the stump can then be planned around, or you can decide to move it first.

How it works

How a Job Runs

Send two photos

One of the stump with something for scale, one of the way in, plus your town. Call, use the form, or email the photos.

Get your quote

Jordan quotes every job himself. Estimates are free, and you have the number before any work starts.

Lines get marked

Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them. 811 does not mark private lines, so point out irrigation, lighting, invisible fence and septic parts.

The grind

The stump is ground in passes to below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Tell us first if you are planting or laying turf and it goes deeper.

Clean ground

Grindings are raked back into the hole and topped, left in a pile for your beds, or hauled off. Any marks on the lawn get raked.
