Greenville County, South Carolina

Stump Grinding and Removal Across Greenville County

Greenville County is the most populous county in South Carolina, with 525,534 people at the 2020 count, and it stretches from mountains to Piedmont. Its northern border follows the crests of the Blue Ridge and holds the northernmost point in the state, with Caesars Head and Jones Gap state parks up there. To the south it flattens into subdivisions over the Piedmont's red clay. To the northeast it borders Polk County, North Carolina, which is where Tryon is.

JB Stump Grinding & Land Management works from Tryon, so Greenville County comes in two halves. The north end, around Gowensville, Tigerville and the SC 11 corridor, is inside the normal area, and one good-sized stump is worth the trip. The city of Greenville and everything south of it is the far edge of the map. There, several stumps, big stumps, tight access or stump grinding that runs into clearing or grading make the drive worth it, and small jobs are fitted in with other work nearby.

Greenville County towns and communities

In the foothills, Gowensville sits on SC 14 near the Spartanburg County line, and Tigerville is home to North Greenville University. Travelers Rest and Marietta follow US 276 toward the mountains. Berea lies west of the city off White Horse Road, Taylors and Greer to the east. The city of Greenville is the county seat. South of it, Mauldin, Simpsonville, Five Forks and Fountain Inn fill the I-385 side. Fountain Inn reaches into Laurens County and Greer into Spartanburg County.

Who to ask: roads, lots and clearing

The county's own answer book splits roadside trees two ways: Greenville County Public Works trims and removes trees in the county right-of-way, and the state highway department handles them along state roads. Inside a city, ask the city. For anything bigger than a stump, Land Development is the office. Its permit guide puts residential lots that disturb an acre or more under a Land Disturbance permit, and handles smaller building lots through the building permit. Many neighborhoods also have an HOA. Check before work starts, because those answers are theirs to give.

Getting rid of a stump in Greenville County

State law bans yard waste from the landfill, and Greenville County collects it separately at Twin Chimneys and its staffed Residential Waste and Recycling facilities, which take residential loads only and cap them at three cubic yards per vehicle per day. The county's rate sheet lists yard and brush waste as branches less than six inches thick and shorter than six feet. A stump does not fit that description, so ask Solid Waste before loading one. Grinding avoids the question. The Greenville County yard debris guide has more.

Who grinds stumps in Greenville County, SC?

JB Stump Grinding & Land Management takes care of stumps all over Greenville County from its base in Tryon, North Carolina: Gowensville and Tigerville in the north, Travelers Rest, Marietta, Berea, Greer and Taylors, the city of Greenville, and south to Mauldin, Simpsonville, Five Forks and Fountain Inn. Every quote comes from Jordan. Ring (828) 574-4474, or email two photos and the name of your community.

Which parts of Greenville County are closest to JB Stump Grinding?

The north end. Gowensville and Tigerville, up near the Spartanburg County line and the foothills, are inside the normal working area from Tryon, and a single decent stump is worth the trip there. The city of Greenville and the towns south of it are the far edge, where several stumps or a bigger job make the most sense.

Can I take a whole stump to a Greenville County waste and recycling center?

Ask Solid Waste first. The county collects yard waste separately from household trash, and the county's definition of brush stops at limbs thinner than six inches and shorter than six feet, which a stump is not. The staffed residential sites also cap loads at three cubic yards per vehicle per day. Grinding the stump in place leaves chips instead.

Who removes a stump in a Greenville County road right-of-way?

Start with the road. Greenville County says its Public Works Division trims and removes trees within the county right-of-way, and the state highway department does the same along state roads. Inside Greenville, Greer or another city, ask the city. Find out whose ground it is before you pay anyone to grind a stump at the edge of the road.

How it works

How a Job Runs

Send two photos

One of the stump with something for scale, one of the way in, plus your town. Call, use the form, or email the photos.

Get your quote

Jordan quotes every job himself. Estimates are free, and you have the number before any work starts.

Lines get marked

Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them. 811 does not mark private lines, so point out irrigation, lighting, invisible fence and septic parts.

The grind

The stump is ground in passes to below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Tell us first if you are planting or laying turf and it goes deeper.

Clean ground

Grindings are raked back into the hole and topped, left in a pile for your beds, or hauled off. Any marks on the lawn get raked.
