Gravel Driveways in Hendersonville, NC

Hendersonville sits at 2,100 feet, and a lot of its driveways climb. A gravel drive on a mountain lot has to hold its stone through a freeze, a thaw and a summer thunderstorm, which is more than most were built for. Jordan cuts them right the first time and rebuilds the ones that have washed to the road.

Gravel Driveways in Hendersonville

Apple country, half a mile up

Hendersonville is the Henderson County seat, about thirty minutes up the mountain from Tryon on US 176. The town itself is on fairly level ground along Mud Creek, with older neighbourhoods like Druid Hills and the Fifth Avenue blocks on paved streets. The gravel drives are outside that core, on the hills toward Flat Rock, Laurel Park, Edneyville and Dana, where the orchards are.

Those lots were farmed or logged before they were built on, and the drive often follows an old orchard road or a skid trail. It goes where the ground allowed a tractor to go, not where water wants to leave. That is the starting point for most of the gravel calls Jordan gets from Henderson County.

A drive that climbs

Water on a steep drive picks up speed, and fast water carries gravel. By the bottom of a long grade it has cut a channel down the middle, dumped the fines in the road and left the coarse stone loose on top. Every spring the owner has it topped up, and every summer it goes again.

A steep drive is built to get the water off it before it can run. The surface is crowned, or pitched to one side where the hill allows, and water bars or dips are cut across it at intervals so each section drains on its own. Coarser, angular stone goes on the grade, because it locks together where pea gravel rolls. Where the drive cuts into the hill, a ditch on the uphill side keeps the slope's water from crossing it.

Freeze, thaw and mud season

At this elevation the ground freezes and thaws a dozen times a winter. Water in the subgrade expands, lifts the stone, then drops it back into mud when it thaws. A drive with no base turns to soup every February and firms up in May, with the gravel somewhere in between.

The cure is drainage under the stone as much as on top of it. The soft subgrade is cut out and geotextile fabric separates the stone from the clay. A thick base of coarse stone then gives the water somewhere to go instead of sitting under the drive. The guide on why a gravel driveway washes out goes into what the base is doing.

Orchard roads and long farm lanes

Out in Edneyville and Dana the drives are long, and they carry more than a car. A pickup with a sprayer, a flatbed at harvest, a tractor every week. A quarter mile of lane through an orchard does not need to be a highway. It does need a firm base where the trucks turn and where the ground stays wet in the hollows.

Jordan grades the whole run, rebuilds the soft stretches properly and crowns the rest, so the lane sheds water everywhere rather than just where it failed last. Stumps from old trees in the line of a widened lane can be ground on the same trip; see stump grinding in Hendersonville.

City streets, state roads and NC811

Inside the city limits, a new or changed driveway connection to a city street needs a driveway permit from the City of Hendersonville, with a site plan. North Carolina counties do not maintain roads, so outside the city the road belongs to NCDOT. Its Henderson County maintenance office on Mountain Road handles state-road questions, and a new connection to a state road may need an NCDOT driveway permit.

Before any cut is made, NC811 is contacted three working days ahead so the buried utilities can be marked. Mountain lots often have a water line from a spring or a well, and those private lines are not marked, so say where they run.

Pricing a mountain drive

Steep drives get a visit. Two photos show the surface, but the grade, the ditches and where the water comes from decide the job, and that is a walk up the drive with Jordan. For a flat repair in town, photos and a street are enough. The estimate is free, and the figure includes the stone, any pipe and the hauling.

The short, steep drive to a house in Laurel Park is sometimes better as concrete, and Jordan pours those as well; the guide on concrete versus gravel covers the choice. A bank that keeps sliding onto the drive is a grading job, under the grading and excavation service.

What it includes

What that covers

  • Steep drives rebuilt. Crown or side pitch, water bars cut at intervals, angular stone that locks on a grade.
  • Base under the stone. Soft subgrade cut out, fabric laid, coarse base compacted so freeze and thaw have less to work on.
  • Orchard and farm lanes. Long runs graded end to end, soft stretches rebuilt, turns and hollows based for trucks.
  • Entrances and pipe. Culverts set at the road to the city or NCDOT standard, in the owner's permit.

The mountain drives continue down the escarpment to Columbus, where the lots climb the Blue Ridge from the Polk County side, and over the Saluda grade to the farms around Landrum. The flatter work in Spartanburg and Greer is a longer run but on the same route. My Hendersonville drive washes to the road every summer. What is wrong with it?

Water is running down the length of it instead of off the sides. On a grade that water moves fast enough to carry gravel. The fix is a crown or side pitch, water bars cut across the drive at intervals, and angular stone that locks together instead of rolling.

Why does the drive turn to mud every February?

Freeze and thaw. Water trapped under the stone expands when it freezes, lifts the gravel, and drops it into mud when it thaws. A drive with a fabric layer and a thick coarse base lets that water drain instead of sitting under the surface.

Do I need a permit for a driveway in Hendersonville?

For a new or changed connection to a city street, the City of Hendersonville issues a driveway permit and asks for a site plan. Outside the city, the roads are NCDOT's, and a new connection to a state road may need an NCDOT driveway permit from the Henderson County office. Resurfacing an existing drive needs neither.

Can the whole orchard lane be done, or just the bad spots?

Either, but the whole run lasts longer. Soft stretches are cut out and rebuilt with base, and the rest is regraded and crowned so it sheds water everywhere, not only where it failed last winter. Jordan prices both ways if you ask.

Is it worth a visit for one steep drive?

Yes. On a grade the ditches, the water bars and where the water comes from decide the job, and that cannot be seen in a photo. Hendersonville is half an hour from Tryon and the visit is free. Flat repairs in town can be priced from two photos.
