Pasture, Field and Fence Line Stump Grinding

A stump in a paddock is something a horse can catch a leg on, and a stump in a fence row is why the mower stops short. JB grinds pasture, field and fence line stumps below grade so the ground can be mowed and fenced.

Pasture & Fence Lines

Pasture & Fence Lines: What the Job Involves

Yard stumps are ugly. Pasture stumps are a problem. A stump in a paddock or beside a riding path is something a horse can catch a leg on. A stump in a hay field is what the mower finds every year. A stump in a fence row is why the new fence has a kink in it and the weeds never get cut. Ground four to eight inches below grade, all three stop being there, and a tractor can run straight over the spot.

The work is the same tracked Carlton grinder that goes into back yards, on easier ground. An open field is usually simple to reach, and a large stump out in the open is often a quicker job than a small one boxed in behind a house. Fence lines take more care. Trees that grew up in a fence row often have old wire grown into the wood. Wire in a stump is worth knowing about before the machine starts, not after.

The area runs through horse country on both sides of the state line, and the hub for stump grinding in Polk County and the page for Landrum cover the closest of it. Close to home a single stump is worth the trip. Farms rarely have just one, and a list of stumps in one visit is how field work is usually quoted. How the grinding itself is done is on the main stump grinding page.

What it includes

What pasture and fence line work includes

  • Paddock and field stumps ground below grade
  • Fence-row stumps ground beside standing fence
  • Several stumps across a property in one visit
  • Grindings raked back, piled or hauled off
  • Whole removal where posts or footings go
  • A free quote from photos and a count

Stumps in paddocks and pastures

In a pasture the goal is flat, safe ground. Grinding takes the stump and the root flare below grade, the grindings are raked back into the hole and topped off, and the spot can be mowed with everything else. Say what animals are on the field, because it changes what should happen to the grindings. Extension services warn that bedding with black walnut shavings in it can cause laminitis in horses, so if the stump was walnut, the safe choice is to have those grindings hauled off instead of left where horses stand. Hauling is quoted separately. Gates need to be wide enough for a truck and trailer, or there needs to be a place to unload nearby.

Fence lines and old wire

Fence-row stumps are close to posts, wire and the property line, so say which side the machine can work from. A stump can usually be ground with the fence standing. Where a new post or a gate footing is going on the exact spot, the stump comes out whole with the excavator, because a post set in rotting wood does not stay put. Look the stump over for staples, barbed wire and old woven wire and mention what you find. Black locust, a tree often found along old fence rows, can send up root shoots after the stump is gone. The guide do tree stumps grow back explains what to do about those.

Wet ground, long hauls and what to send

Low pasture corners and creek bottoms stay soft after rain. A tracked machine is easy on firm ground and hard on saturated ground, so wet fields are worth waiting out, and you will be told so. For a quote, send a photo of each stump with a bucket or a boot beside it, a wide shot that shows the field and the gate, and a count. A rough map helps on a big place. Add your town. Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them, and 811 does not mark private water lines to troughs, electric fence feeds or septic parts, so point those out.

Can you grind stumps along a fence without taking the fence down?

Usually, yes. The grinder works from whichever side has room, and most fence-row stumps are ground with the fence standing. Send a photo that shows the stump, the posts on either side and how close the wire runs. If a section would have to come out, you are asked first and it is agreed before the work.

Is a stump in a horse pasture worth grinding?

If horses are turned out on it, yes. A stump in a paddock is a thing to catch a leg on, and it is usually low enough to hide in grass. Ground below grade and raked level, the spot is safe to ride and mow over. Send a count and photos, since fields rarely have just one.

What if old fence wire has grown into the stump?

Say so before the work. Trees along fence rows often swallow staples, barbed wire and woven wire over the years, and metal in the wood is hard on a cutting wheel. Knowing ahead of time means the stump is approached the right way. A photo of where the wire goes into the wood helps.

Can stump grindings be left in a pasture with horses or cattle?

For most species they are raked back into the hole and topped off like anywhere else. Black walnut is the exception to raise: Extension services warn that black walnut shavings in horse bedding can cause laminitis, so the safe choice is to have those hauled off. If you are unsure what the tree was, say so, and ask your vet or county Extension office about your own animals.

Can a stump grinder get across a wet field to reach the stumps?

It can cross firm ground without much sign it was there, because the tracks spread the weight. Saturated ground is different. A tracked machine will rut a soft field, so low corners and bottom land are worth leaving until they dry. Tell Jordan how the field drains and he will say when it makes sense.

How it works

How a Job Runs

Send two photos

One of the stump with something for scale, one of the way in, plus your town. Call, use the form, or email the photos.

Get your quote

Jordan quotes every job himself. Estimates are free, and you have the number before any work starts.

Lines get marked

Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them. 811 does not mark private lines, so point out irrigation, lighting, invisible fence and septic parts.

The grind

The stump is ground in passes to below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Tell us first if you are planting or laying turf and it goes deeper.

Clean ground

Grindings are raked back into the hole and topped, left in a pile for your beds, or hauled off. Any marks on the lawn get raked.
