Stump Grinding and Stump Removal: Western NC & Upstate SC
Tree stump in the way? JB grinds it out below grade with a tracked Carlton grinder that fits standard yard gates, and lifts out whole the ones that have to go. Free estimates from two photos and your town.
How Stump Grinding Works
A stump is what is left when the tree is gone, and it is usually somewhere awkward. Behind a fence. Down the side of the house. In the middle of a lawn you now have to mow around. Stump grinding is the fix for nearly all of them. A cutting wheel works the stump down in passes until it sits below the ground around it, usually four to eight inches under. The stump is not pulled, so the yard around it is not torn up.
JB Stump Grinding & Land Management is based in Tryon, North Carolina, on the state line. The stump grinding service covers Polk, Henderson and Rutherford counties in North Carolina and Spartanburg and Greenville counties in South Carolina, with Asheville at the northern edge and Greenville at the southern edge. Close to home, stump grinding in Tryon can be a single stump. Hendersonville sits inside the normal area. Out toward Spartanburg, jobs are easiest to book alongside other work in the same area, and several stumps make more sense than one.
People search for this three ways: stump grinding, stump removal and tree stump removal. Most of the time they mean one thing, which is the stump gone and grass where it stood. Grinding does that. Full removal, where the root ball is lifted out whole, is a bigger job with its own reasons. Both are covered here, and the harder versions each have a page of their own: large stumps, tight access, storm root balls, commercial sites, and pasture and fence lines. Jordan quotes every job himself.

What a stump grinding visit includes
- Stump ground four to eight inches below grade
- Deeper grinding where turf or planting follows
- Grindings raked back, piled or hauled off
- A tracked grinder that fits standard yard gates
- Matting to protect the driveway on the way in
- A free quote agreed before the work starts
How stump grinding works
The Carlton grinder runs on tracks and carries a cutting wheel on the front. The wheel sweeps across the cut face and takes the stump down a pass at a time, root flare included, until what is left sits under the surrounding grade. A straightforward stump takes minutes once the machine is beside it. Getting to it is the variable. There is no season when grinding does not work, though soft, wet ground is worth waiting out. The tracks are easy on a firm lawn, and any marks get raked before the trailer is loaded. Tree still standing? Call or send a photo and we will talk through the options.
What you are left with
Where the stump stood there is a hollow and a mound of grindings, which is wood chips mixed with soil. The mound always looks bigger than the stump did, because solid wood takes up more room once it is loose. You choose what happens to it before the work starts. By default the grindings are raked back into the hole and topped off. They can be left in a pile if you want them for beds, or hauled off, which is quoted separately. A stump ground below grade almost never grows back. A few species can sucker from roots further out, and those shoots can be mowed or cut off as they appear.
Stump grinding or stump removal: which one you need
Grinding leaves the roots in the ground to rot down on their own. Under a lawn, a bed or mulch that is fine, and it is what most yards need. It is not fine where a footing, a post, a slab, a drain or a pool is going, or where a new tree is going in the same spot. Then the stump has to come out whole. Full stump removal means the excavator or the loader lifts the root ball out and it leaves on a trailer. That leaves a hole to backfill and let settle. Say what is planned for the spot and you will be told which job it is.
Getting to the stump, and what a quote needs
Access decides more than size. The grinder is narrow and fits standard yard gates, which is the whole idea behind tight-access stump grinding in back yards and side yards. Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them. 811 does not mark private lines, so point out irrigation, low-voltage lighting, invisible fence and septic parts. For a quote, send two photos: the stump with something beside it for scale, and the way in. Add your town and how many stumps. What moves the number is set out in the stump grinding cost guide, with no guessing.

Is stump grinding the same as tree stump removal, and which do I ask for?
Most people use the words for the same thing: the stump gone and the yard usable again. Grinding does that by taking the stump below grade and leaving the roots to rot. Full removal lifts the root ball out whole. Ask for grinding unless something is being built, dug or planted on that exact spot, and say so if it is.
What do you need from me to quote a stump grinding job?
Two photos and your town are usually enough for a real number without a visit. One photo of the stump with something beside it for scale, and one of the way in from where a truck and trailer can park. Say how many stumps there are and what you want done with the grindings. Photos can be emailed to jbdumpsters@outlook.com.
Is there stump grinding near me, and will you come out for just one stump?
If you are in Polk, Henderson, Rutherford, Spartanburg or Greenville county, yes, you are in the area. Close to home, around Tryon, Columbus, Saluda, Mill Spring, Landrum and Campobello, a single stump is worth the trip. At the edges of the area, toward Asheville, Spartanburg and Greenville, jobs are easiest to book alongside other work nearby, and several stumps make more sense than one. Ask anyway, with a photo.
What should I point out in the yard before the stump is ground?
Anything buried that belongs to you. Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them, but 811 does not mark private lines. Irrigation pipe and heads, low-voltage lighting cable, invisible dog fence and septic parts are the usual ones. If you know where they run, say so or flag them. If you are not sure, say that too.
The tree is still standing. Can I call about the stump now?
Yes. Call or send a photo and we will talk through the options. It helps to know the stump is coming before the tree comes down, because where the trunk gets cut and how the yard is reached both change the stump job. A photo of the tree and the way in is a fine place to start.
