Demolition and Tear-Downs in Columbus, NC
Columbus is the Polk County seat and five minutes from the shop, so it is where Jordan works most often. Older in-town houses with a garage out back, mountain lots up toward White Oak, and farms along the creeks all have something that needs to come down. He takes it apart, hauls it and leaves the spot graded.
Demolition in Columbus
The county seat, five minutes from the shop
Columbus has been the seat of Polk County since the county was formed in 1855, and it is still a small town, about a thousand people along Highway 108 with the courthouse in the middle. What has grown is the county around it, which the thermal belt and the mild winters have filled with people retiring up from the flat country.
So the demolition work splits three ways. In town, an old garage or a shed behind a house that has been there since before the interstate. On the mountain, a deck or an outbuilding on a lot someone bought for the view. Out on the farms, a barn or a pole shed that outlived its use.
Garages in town, barns on the farms
The in-town garage is the common job. Wood frame or block, on a slab, usually with power run out to it at some point. Jordan takes the roof off, then the walls, loading with the grapple on the mini track loader so the debris never piles up in a yard that is not big to begin with.
Barns are the other end. Tin, rafters, posts set in the ground, and a lot of whatever was stored inside. The excavator pulls the posts and breaks deep footings, and the trailer carries it off in sorted loads. Barn and outbuilding demolition says what to clear out beforehand.
Mountain lots and the drive up to them
A lot on White Oak Mountain or up toward Tryon Peak comes with a drive that climbs. The building that needs to go is often at the top, and the question is whether a machine can get there without tearing up the drive or the slope.
The mini track loader is the answer most of the time. It is narrow, it is on rubber tracks, and it climbs grades a wheeled machine cannot. The trailer stays where it can turn around, and debris is carried down to it. A deck hanging off the back of a mountain house comes apart from above, piece by piece, rather than being pulled from below.
Polk County Building Inspections is on Walker Street
Polk County Building Inspections sits at 35 Walker Street in Columbus, and that is where building permits for the county come from. The Town of Columbus has its own zoning permits as well, so inside the town limits call Town Hall first and ask whether the job needs both.
Before any digging, NC811 marks the buried public lines. It is free, North Carolina law requires it, and it takes three working days, so it is the first thing booked once a date is set. The power company disconnects any feed to the building ahead of that.
Creeks, the storm and fill
Polk County is cut by creeks, White Oak Creek and the branches that feed the Green and Pacolet rivers, and Helene in September 2024 moved water through them that nobody had seen before. Sheds and carports along the creek bottoms were shifted, flooded or flattened, and some are still waiting to be dealt with.
Those are straightforward to take down, and the fallen trees that came with them can be handled on the same visit. Near a creek, ask the county before fill is brought in, since some of that ground is mapped floodplain. Storm damage in western North Carolina covers the combined job.
Grading, gravel and clearing on the same trip
Being this close, Jordan can come and look at the job in person, which costs nothing, and the same visit can cover the rest of the lot. The site gets leveled and a drive cut and graveled through grading and excavation in Columbus, and the brush around the old barn goes through land clearing in Columbus.
Houses, and anything needing asbestos abatement or a licensed demolition contractor, are not his work, and he says so when he sees it rather than after. The demolition service page and the Columbus page list the rest.

What that covers
- Garages and sheds. Frame or block, roof first, loaded straight to the trailer.
- Barns and pole sheds. Tin, rafters and posts out, deep footings broken and hauled.
- Mountain decks. Taken apart from above on steep lots, debris carried down.
- Slabs and pads. Broken with the breaker, hauled, the ground graded to drain.

Columbus is the middle of Jordan's home ground. The same tear-downs run through Tryon, Mill Spring, Green Creek and Saluda, down the hill into Landrum and up the mountain to Hendersonville. Rutherford County, from Rutherfordton out to Forest City, is the other direction on Highway 108. Everything in Polk County is a short drive, which keeps the price down. The service area page shows the whole map.
You get Jordan. Not a crew he sent.
You call
You call or send two photos. Jordan looks at the job himself, on the ground or from your photos, rather than pricing it off a guess.
A number first
You get one figure before anything starts, with the hauling and the cleanup in it.
He runs the machine
Then he shows up with the machine and the trailer and does the work.
Ground left usable
Voids get filled and the ground gets graded back so you can pour, build, seed or just mow.

Questions people ask
Not seeing yours? Call (828) 574-4474 and ask Jordan, or read the guides.
Where do I get a permit to tear down a garage in Columbus?
Building permits for Polk County come from Polk County Building Inspections at 35 Walker Street in Columbus. The Town of Columbus has its own zoning permits as well. Inside the town limits, call Town Hall first and ask whether the job needs both before a date is set.
Can you get up a steep mountain drive?
Usually. The mini track loader is on rubber tracks and climbs grades a wheeled machine will not, and it is narrow enough for most mountain drives. The trailer stays at the bottom if it has to, and the debris is carried down. A photo of the drive from the road answers most of it.
A shed along the creek was wrecked in the storm. Is that your kind of job?
Yes. The shed comes down, the fallen trees are cut and moved with the grapple, and the stumps can be ground on the same visit. If the lot is in mapped floodplain, ask the county before fill is brought in to level the spot. Send photos that show the water side of the lot.
Do I have to call NC811 myself?
It is arranged before the job and it is free. NC811 has the utilities mark their buried public lines, which takes three working days. It does not mark the private wire from your house to the garage or the line to the well, so tell Jordan where those run if you know.
Will you do a single small shed in Columbus?
Yes. Columbus is five minutes from the shop, so there is no long drive to build into the price, and a single shed or carport is a normal job here. A look in person is usually easy to arrange rather than pricing from photos. You get one figure with the haul-off included.
Other work he takes on
Most jobs end up being two or three of these at once, and they get quoted together.
