Demolition and Barn Removal in Travelers Rest, SC

Travelers Rest grew by seventy percent between the last two censuses, and a lot of that growth is on land that was farmed a generation ago. The barn, the pole shed and the old trailer that came with the parcel are what stand in the way. Jordan takes them down and hauls them off, then grades the spot.

Demolition in Travelers Rest

Farm parcels with new neighbours

Travelers Rest sits where the Buncombe Road left the flat country and started up toward the mountains, and for two hundred years it was a place to stop. Then the Swamp Rabbit Trail came through, the city went from about 4,600 people in 2010 to nearly 7,800 in 2020, and the fields north of Main Street started turning into streets.

The tear-down calls follow that pattern. A family parcel is split and the barn sits on the lot being sold. A new house goes up and the old pole shed is in the view. A mobile home that housed a relative for twenty years is empty.

Barns and pole sheds on a split lot

An old barn is more work than it looks. The tin comes off first and is loaded separately, then the rafters, then the posts, which are usually set in the ground and have to be pulled. Jordan uses the mini track loader with the grapple for the structure and the excavator when posts or footings run deep.

Pole sheds go faster but have the same posts. Either way, the debris is sorted as it is loaded, metal apart from wood, and hauled on the trailer. Barn and outbuilding demolition goes through what to look for before one comes down, including what might be stored inside.

The old mobile home at the back

Older parcels around Travelers Rest often carry a mobile home that has been empty for years. It can go, but not until the power, water and septic are disconnected and the title is settled, because a trailer is a vehicle on paper until it is not.

Once that is done it is stripped, cut into sections and loaded. The piers and the tie-downs come out with it, and the pad is graded over. Mobile home removal covers the steps in order, including the paperwork most people have not thought about.

Slope, the Reedy and where the water goes

The ground around Travelers Rest tilts. The city sits above a thousand feet, the Reedy River runs along the trail, and the lots get steeper and stonier the closer they are to the mountain. A building that stood on a cut-and-fill bench leaves a shelf when it is gone.

So the grading at the end is not an afterthought. The bench is shaped so water sheds downhill and away from the house, not into a flat spot that becomes a pond. On a lot near the river, ask before fill is brought in, since some of that ground is mapped floodplain.

City permit, county permit and SC811

Inside the city limits, the Building Department at 125 Trailblazer Drive takes permit applications online, and its own guidance says some projects also need Greenville County permits. Outside the city, it is Greenville County Building Safety at 301 University Ridge in Greenville. Ask before a date is fixed, since the city has been annexing.

SC811 marks buried public lines before a footing is dug or a slab is broken. South Carolina law requires the notice, and it takes three working days. A barn with a light on a pole has a feed somewhere, and the utility has to disconnect it first.

A drive or a dry yard afterwards

When the building is gone, the spot usually needs to become something. Jordan cuts and gravels drives through gravel driveways in Travelers Rest, and fixes low ground through yard drainage in Travelers Rest, often on the same visit as the tear-down.

Two photos and the road name get you one figure with the hauling in it, or he comes out and looks for free. He does not take down houses or anything needing asbestos abatement, and says so when he sees it. The demolition service page and the Travelers Rest page cover the rest.

What it includes

What that covers

  • Barns and pole sheds. Tin off, rafters down, posts pulled, everything loaded and hauled.
  • Mobile homes. Stripped, sectioned and hauled once utilities and title are settled.
  • Sheds and decks. Pulled apart with the grapple and carried to the trailer.
  • Pads and footings. Broken with the breaker, hauled, and the bench graded to drain.
Travelers Rest and nearby

Travelers Rest and the towns nearby

The same farm-building work runs down the Highway 25 and 276 corridors. Jordan takes down barns and sheds in Greenville to the south and in Taylors to the east, and Marietta, Tigerville and Slater are on the same roads. Travelers Rest is a longer drive from Tryon than the Spartanburg side, so a barn with a trailer behind it makes a good day. The full map is on the service area page.

How the work actually goes

You get Jordan. Not a crew he sent.

You call

You call or send two photos. Jordan looks at the job himself, on the ground or from your photos, rather than pricing it off a guess.

A number first

You get one figure before anything starts, with the hauling and the cleanup in it.

He runs the machine

Then he shows up with the machine and the trailer and does the work.

Ground left usable

Voids get filled and the ground gets graded back so you can pour, build, seed or just mow.

Do I need a permit to take down a barn in Travelers Rest?

Ask the city Building Department at 125 Trailblazer Drive if the lot is inside the limits, and Greenville County Building Safety at 301 University Ridge if it is not. The city's own guidance says some projects need county permits too, so the honest answer is to call before a date is set.

What has to happen before an old mobile home is hauled off?

Power, water and septic are disconnected, and the title is dealt with, since a mobile home is registered like a vehicle. Then it is stripped and cut into sections for the trailer. Mobile home removal lists the steps in the order they happen.

The barn is up a steep drive. Can you get to it?

Usually. The mini track loader is on rubber tracks and handles grades a wheeled machine will not. The trailer may need to stay lower down with debris carried to it, which adds time but not surprises. A photo of the drive from the road tells most of the story.

Can I burn the barn instead?

Not in a way worth recommending. Treated lumber, tin, wiring and whatever is stored inside make it a bad fire, and Greenville County and the state have rules on what can be burned at all. Burning yard debris in NC and SC explains what is allowed and what is not.

Will the spot be ready for a driveway afterwards?

If that is the plan, say so when you call. The footings and posts come out rather than being buried, the ground is compacted in layers, and the bench is graded to shed water. Gravel can go down on the same visit through the gravel driveway service.
