Gravel Driveways in Forest City, NC

Forest City is flatter and more practical than the mountain towns west of it, and so are its driveways. Long gravel runs off the county roads, drives to a house on family land, and old stone that has sunk into red clay. Jordan rebuilds those on a real base and cuts new ones that drain from the start.

Gravel Driveways in Forest City

The biggest town in Rutherford County

Forest City is the largest town in Rutherford County, about thirty minutes northeast of Tryon on US 74. It was a textile town, and the mill villages and the Main Street districts still give it its shape. The ground is Piedmont, around a thousand feet and gently rolling, with the Second Broad River passing the east side of town on its way down to the Broad.

Gravel drives here are not a mountain problem. They are the long drives on family land out the county roads, where a house or a mobile home was set at the back of a field. The drive was whatever the truck could get down. Thirty years on, the truck still gets down it, barely.

The drive that became two ruts

The typical call is a few hundred feet of drive with two deep wheel tracks and grass in the middle. Gravel went down years ago, straight on the clay, and every wet season the tires pushed more of it under. Now the ruts hold water, the car bottoms out on the hump, and nobody wants to drive it after rain.

The fix is a rebuild rather than a top-up. The hump and the soft ruts are cut out together, and the subgrade is shaped so it falls to the sides. Fabric goes down to keep the new stone out of the clay. A coarse base is compacted in and a finer top course is crowned over it. The guide on why a gravel driveway washes out explains why the stone kept disappearing.

A new drive to a house site

Plenty of lots in and around Forest City are carved off a parent tract, with the new house or a modular set well back from the road. The drive is the first thing built and the last thing finished, and it usually has to carry concrete trucks and a delivery crew before it carries a car.

Jordan cuts the route, strips the topsoil and roots, and builds the base to take construction traffic, so it is not rebuilt after the house is up. Where the route crosses low ground, the drive is raised on fill and the water is carried under it in a pipe. Stumps in the line are ground on the way through; see stump grinding in Forest City, and the guide on clearing stumps for a new driveway.

Low ground and the river side

East of town the land drops toward the Second Broad and the creeks that feed it. Some of the long drives out there cross ground that stays wet most of the winter. A drive across a wet hollow sinks no matter how much stone goes on it, because the base is sitting in water.

On that ground the drive is built up above the wet rather than cut into it. A pipe under the drive lets the hollow drain across it, and a shallow ditch on each side keeps the water off the stone. If the lot is in a mapped flood zone, the Town of Forest City's planning office wants the floodplain shown on a site plan before anything is built. Ask there first.

Town streets, NCDOT roads and NC811

Inside the town limits, the Town of Forest City's Planning and Code Enforcement office handles building and zoning questions. A site plan for a new house has to show where the drive goes. Outside the limits the roads are the state's, since North Carolina counties do not maintain roads. The NCDOT county maintenance office for Rutherford is in Spindale. A new connection to a state road, or a pipe under the entrance, is their question.

Before the first cut, NC811 is contacted three working days ahead and the buried utilities get marked. That request is part of the job. Lines you ran yourself, to a well or an outbuilding, are not marked, so say where they are.

What it costs to do once

A rutted drive can be priced from two photos and the road name. A new drive to a house site gets a walk-through so the route and any wet ground are seen first. Forest City is half an hour from Tryon, so the visit is no trouble and it is free.

The figure covers the cut, fabric, base and top stone, pipe where it is needed, and hauling off the clay and roots. Clearing the rest of a back lot for the house is under land clearing in Forest City, and the pad itself is part of the grading and excavation service. Jordan puts the pieces on one quote.

What it includes

What that covers

  • Rutted drives rebuilt. Ruts and hump cut out, fabric and compacted base laid, a crowned top course over it.
  • New drives to sites. Route cut and based for construction traffic, stumps ground on the way through.
  • Drives across wet ground. Built up above the wet with a pipe underneath and a ditch on each side.
  • Entrances and pipe. Pipe set under the entrance to NCDOT's standard, in the owner's permit.

You get one figure before anything starts, with the hauling and the cleanup in it.

Ground left usable

Questions about this work

Questions people ask

Not seeing yours? Call (828) 574-4474 and ask Jordan, or read the guides.

Will another load of gravel fix my rutted Forest City drive?

It will hide the ruts until the next wet season. The stone keeps sinking because there is nothing between it and the clay. Cutting out the ruts, laying fabric and rebuilding with a compacted base and a crown fixes it once instead of every other year.

Can the drive go in before the house is built?

It should. Concrete trucks and delivery crews are the heaviest traffic the drive will ever see, so the base is built for them from the start. That way it is not rebuilt after the house is finished. Stumps in the route are ground on the same trip.

My drive crosses a wet hollow. Is that fixable?

Yes. The drive is raised on fill above the wet ground rather than cut into it. A pipe underneath lets the hollow still drain, and a ditch on each side keeps water off the stone. If the lot is in a mapped flood zone, ask the Town's planning office before fill goes in.

Who do I ask about the pipe at the road?

Outside the Forest City limits the road is NCDOT's, and the county maintenance office for Rutherford is in Spindale. A new connection to a state road or a culvert under the entrance goes through them. Inside the limits, the Town's Planning and Code Enforcement office handles site plans.

Is Forest City too far from Tryon for a small job?

No. It is about thirty minutes on US 74, which is a normal run. Two photos and a road name are enough to price a repair. A new drive gets a free visit from Jordan so the route and any wet ground can be seen first.
