Gravel Driveways in Boiling Springs, SC

Boiling Springs more than doubled in size in twenty years, and most of it is subdivisions along Highway 9 with a concrete drive out front. The gravel work is what comes after. A side strip for the second truck, a lane back to a shop, and the old farm drives on the lots the subdivisions have not reached.

Gravel Driveways in Boiling Springs

A spring, a highway and a lot of new houses

Boiling Springs is named for a spring on Highway 9 that used to throw water six feet in the air. It slowed as the land around it was built on, and today it sits still in a small park beside a shopping centre. That is a fair picture of the place. It is a census area in Spartanburg County, not a town, and it went from about 4,500 people in 2000 to over 10,000 in 2020.

Nearly all of that is subdivisions, and nearly every subdivision house has a short concrete drive and a two-car garage. The gravel calls from Boiling Springs are about what the builder did not provide. The rest are about the older lots in between, where a drive has been sinking into red clay for thirty years.

The strip beside the drive for the second truck

The commonest job in the subdivisions is a gravel strip alongside the concrete drive. The household has a work truck, a boat for Lake Bowen or a teenager's car, and the garage is full. Parking on the grass works until the first wet week, and then there are two ruts and a complaint from the neighbour.

The strip is built like a small drive. The sod and topsoil come off and the clay is shaped to fall away from the concrete. Fabric goes down, and a base and top course are compacted to sit level with the slab edge. A clean edge against the lawn matters here, because these are tidy streets. Check the HOA covenants first; some have rules about gravel and about what can be parked where.

A lane to the shop at the back

On the larger lots off Rainbow Lake Road and out toward Lake Bowen, people put up a detached shop or a pole barn behind the house and want to drive to it. The route usually runs across the lawn, past the septic tank and around a couple of trees. Where it goes matters as much as how it is built.

Jordan walks the route first. The lane is kept off the drain field, and trees in the way are ground out. Then it is cut to follow the natural fall of the lot, so it does not become a channel for the yard's water. If the shop pad is going in at the same time, the lane and the pad are built together; the grading and excavation service covers pads.

Old drives on the in-between lots

Between the subdivisions there are still older houses on an acre or two, with the drive that came with them. Gravel was put down, more gravel was put down, and now the drive is a trough with clay showing through and water standing in the low spots after every rain.

The honest fix is not another load of stone. The soft centre is cut out, the subgrade is shaped and compacted, and fabric is laid. Then the drive is rebuilt with a coarse base and a finer top, crowned so the water runs off. It costs more than topping up once, and less than topping up every other year. The guide on a gravel driveway washing out explains the difference.

Highway 9, county roads and SC811

Boiling Springs has no town hall, so the road itself decides who to ask. On a county road, Spartanburg County's Roads and Bridges department issues the driveway access permit and sets the pipe size once the entrance is staked. Reinforced concrete pipe is required under the entrance. Highway 9 and the other state routes are SCDOT right-of-way, and the encroachment permit for a new entrance comes from SCDOT.

Before anything is cut, SC811 is notified so the buried gas, water and power lines get marked. South Carolina law requires it, with at least three business days' notice. On a subdivision lot the services run close to the surface near the drive, so this is not a formality. Jordan files the request as part of the job.

What a figure includes

Two photos and the street name will get a price for a side strip or a repair, usually the same day. A lane to a shop gets a visit so the route can be walked. The number covers the cut, the fabric and stone, any pipe, and hauling off the spoil. Estimates are free.

If the old concrete drive needs to come out before the gravel goes down, that is a concrete removal job in Boiling Springs and it goes on the same quote. A drive that stays wet because the yard beside it drains onto it is a yard drainage problem first, and Jordan will say so when he looks.

What it includes

What that covers

  • Side parking strips. A gravel strip beside the concrete drive, built on fabric and base and finished level with the slab.
  • Lanes to back shops. A route walked and cut around the septic field and the trees, following the fall of the lot.
  • Old drives rebuilt. The sunken centre cut out, fabric, base and a crowned top course put back.
  • Entrances and pipe. Reinforced concrete pipe set under the entrance to the county or SCDOT standard.

Questions about this work

Questions people ask

Not seeing yours? Call (828) 574-4474 and ask Jordan, or read the guides.

Can I add a gravel parking strip beside my concrete drive in Boiling Springs?

Usually, yes. The strip is built on fabric and compacted base, level with the slab edge, so it does not sink or spread into the lawn. Check your HOA covenants first, since some subdivisions have rules on gravel and on parking trucks or boats in view of the street.

Who issues the permit for a new entrance on Highway 9?

Highway 9 is a state road, so the strip beside it is SCDOT right-of-way and the encroachment permit comes from SCDOT. On a county road it is Spartanburg County Roads and Bridges, which sets the pipe size after the entrance is staked and requires reinforced concrete pipe.

Can a gravel lane run over my septic drain field?

It should not. Traffic compacts the soil over the lines and can crush them, and the field stops working. The lane is routed around the tank and field. If you do not know where they are, the county's septic records or a probe will find them before the route is set.

My old drive has been topped up with gravel for years and still sinks. Why?

Because there is nothing under the stone but clay. Each new load gets pushed down into the mud over a wet winter. Rebuilding it once, with the soft material cut out and fabric and base underneath, stops the cycle.

How do I get a quote?

Send two photos and your street. A side strip or a repair can be priced from that. A lane to a shop gets a free visit from Jordan so the route can be walked and the septic field avoided. Stone, pipe and hauling are all in the one number.
