Gravel Driveways in Spartanburg, SC
Spartanburg is the Hub City, and its gravel drives are mostly on the edges. Long drives off county roads, parking strips behind older houses, the lane to a shop or a back lot. Jordan builds new ones with a proper base and crown, and regrades the old ones that have turned to ruts and potholes.
Gravel Driveways in Spartanburg
An old city with a rural ring
The city of Spartanburg is nearly built out. It grew about two percent between 2020 and 2024 while the county around it grew thirteen, and city officials say the reason is a shortage of open land. So the gravel work is not downtown. It is in the ring outside: the roads off US 29 and SC 9, the acreage around Croft, the old farm lanes that got a house or two added.
Inside the city, gravel shows up as a second parking spot beside a mill-village house, or a pad for a trailer behind a lot in Hampton Heights or Beaumont. Sometimes it is a drive that was simply never paved. Both ends of that get handled, about thirty-five minutes from Tryon down I-26.
The drive that disappeared into the clay
The call that comes most often is about a drive that was graveled once and has been sinking since. The stone was tipped straight onto the red clay with nothing under it, and every wet winter pushed more of it down into the mud. What is left is a pair of ruts with clay showing through and a pothole at every low spot.
Adding more gravel on top buys a season. The real fix is to cut the soft material out, lay geotextile fabric on firm ground, and build the drive back up. A coarse base stone goes first, then a finer top that locks together. Then it is crowned so rain runs to the edges instead of down the middle. The guide on a gravel driveway washing out walks through why the old one failed.
Cecil clay and why the base matters here
The most common soil under Spartanburg is the Cecil series, a sandy loam over deep red clay. The clay drains well enough when it is dry and firm. Wet, it holds water and turns to grease under a tire, which is why a drive with no base fails here even on flat ground.
On a new drive the skid steer strips the topsoil and any roots, the subgrade is shaped and compacted, and the stone goes down in layers. The thickness depends on what will drive on it. A car and a weekend trailer need less than a delivery truck or a dumpster lorry, so say what the drive is for when you ask for a figure.
Culverts and the county's pipe rules
Where a drive crosses a roadside ditch to meet a county road, a pipe has to go under it. Spartanburg County's Roads and Bridges department issues the driveway access permit for county roads, and its inspector sets the pipe size after the entrance is staked. The county requires reinforced concrete pipe, with compacted backfill and a crusher-run base over the top, and twenty feet is the standard residential width.
On a state road, such as US 29, SC 9 or US 176, the strip between the road and your property is SCDOT right-of-way. The encroachment permit then comes from SCDOT's county office instead. Jordan sets the pipe and builds the entrance to whichever standard applies; the permit itself is in the owner's name.
SC811 before the first cut
A new drive means cutting into ground that may have a water service, a gas line or a buried power feed crossing it. That is especially true on a lot that has been built on before. South Carolina law requires that SC811 be notified at least three business days before digging, and the utilities mark their lines for free.
That request goes in before the machine arrives. What SC811 does not mark is anything private: the line from a well to the house, an irrigation main, power to a shed. If you know where those run, say so at the estimate, and they get flagged by hand.
Price, and the concrete question
Two photos of the drive and a street name usually get a figure the same day. For a new drive on an unbuilt lot it helps to see the route, so Jordan comes out and walks it. The number includes the stone, the pipe if there is one, and hauling off whatever is cut out. The estimate is free either way.
Some drives in Spartanburg are better off as concrete, especially short steep ones in town. Jordan pours those too, so the comparison can go on one quote; the concrete service and the guide on concrete versus gravel cover the trade-offs. A drive that floods from the yard beside it is a yard drainage job first. Everything else is under grading and excavation.

What that covers
- New gravel drives. Topsoil stripped, subgrade compacted, fabric, base stone and a crowned top course.
- Regrading old drives. Ruts and potholes cut out, soft spots dug and rebuilt, the crown put back.
- Culverts at the road. Pipe set under the entrance to the county or state standard, backfilled and based.
- Parking pads and turnarounds. Gravel pads for trailers, boats and work trucks beside the house or at the back of the lot.

Can my old Spartanburg gravel drive be fixed, or does it need rebuilding?
If the stone has sunk into the clay and there are ruts with mud showing through, it has no base and needs one. The soft material is cut out, fabric goes down and the drive is rebuilt in layers with a crown. If it is only potholed on the surface, regrading and a top course may be enough.
Do I need a permit for a driveway pipe in Spartanburg County?
Yes, on a county road. Spartanburg County Roads and Bridges issues the driveway access permit, and its inspector sets the pipe size once the entrance is staked. Reinforced concrete pipe is required. On a state road the permit comes from SCDOT's county office instead.
How thick should the gravel be?
It depends on what drives on it and how soft the ground is. A car drive on firm clay needs less than a lane used by delivery trucks or a dumpster. The base layer does most of the work, so say what the drive is for and the layers get sized to match.
Is gravel or concrete cheaper for a short drive in town?
Gravel costs less up front and concrete costs less to live with on a short steep drive, where gravel washes down into the street. Jordan pours concrete as well as building gravel drives, so both options can go on the same quote.
How do I get a price?
Email or text two photos of the drive and your street name. For a new drive on open ground, ask for a visit so the route can be walked. The figure includes stone, pipe and hauling, and the estimate is free.
