Gravel Driveways in Greer, SC

Greer added more people last year than any other city in South Carolina, and a good share of them landed on acreage lots north of town where the road ends in gravel. Jordan cuts new drives, builds pads for trucks and trailers, and rebuilds the drives that washed out in the first wet winter.

Gravel Driveways in Greer

Two counties, one fast-growing city

Greer straddles the line between Greenville and Spartanburg counties, and it has been growing since BMW arrived in the 1990s. The 2025 census estimate put it at just over 50,000 people, the seventeenth fastest-growing city in the country for its size. The subdivisions did most of that, but the city also annexed a lot of countryside, and plenty of people bought land instead of a lot.

North of Wade Hampton Boulevard, out toward Lake Robinson, Lake Cunningham and the South Tyger River, the roads are still rural. Houses go up on two and five acre parcels off SC 101 and SC 14, and nearly every one needs a drive. That is where most of the gravel calls to Tryon come from.

A new drive on an acre or five

The house is set well back from the road, so the drive is long, and the builder left it as a track of clay with a skim of stone. By the second winter the trucks have cut it into ruts. The fix is a proper build. The soft clay comes out, fabric goes on firm subgrade, a thick base of coarse stone is compacted in, and a finer top course locks together under tires.

A long drive also has to shed water sideways along its whole length. Jordan crowns it so each side drops away from the centre, and where the ground beside it is higher he cuts a shallow ditch to carry the water past rather than across. The guide on why a gravel driveway washes out covers what happens when that step is skipped.

Pads for trucks, boats and the camper

The other common job in Greer is not a drive at all but a parking pad. A work truck and trailer that cannot fit beside the house, a boat for Lake Robinson, a camper that lives in the yard eleven months of the year. The grass under them turns to mud by February and the tires sink.

A pad is built the same way as a drive, just wider: topsoil off, subgrade compacted, fabric, base and top stone. The important part is where it sits. It needs to be on ground that drains, with a slight fall away from the house, or it becomes a gravel pond. Jordan looks at the yard first and says where it should go.

The slope down to the road

A lot of lots around Greer sit above the road, so the drive runs downhill to meet it. Every storm sends the top course down the slope and into the ditch, and the owner shovels it back up each spring. The usual cause is water running down the middle instead of off the sides.

On a drive like that the crown is rebuilt. A dip or a shallow water bar is cut across the drive partway down, so the water leaves before it builds up speed. Where the drive meets the ditch, a pipe goes under it so the roadside water keeps flowing. Coarser stone on the last stretch stays put better than fine gravel.

Which office, in a town with three

Because Greer sits in two counties, the road the drive meets decides who issues the permit. Greenville County Public Works requires an encroachment permit for driveway tie-ins on county roads and publishes its own guidelines for driveways with culverts. Spartanburg County's Roads and Bridges department handles the same thing on its side of the line, and it sets the pipe size after the entrance is staked.

State roads are different again. Wade Hampton Boulevard, SC 14, SC 101 and SC 290 are SCDOT roads, so the strip beside them is state right-of-way and the encroachment permit comes from SCDOT. Inside the city limits, ask the City of Greer as well. Jordan builds to whichever standard applies; the permit is in the owner's name.

Locates, the quote and what is in it

SC811 marks the buried utilities before any cut is made, with three business days' notice, and that request is part of the job. On a new lot the water and power services usually run right up the line where the drive wants to go, so it matters.

Two photos and the road name are enough for Jordan to price a repair. A new drive on open ground gets a visit, because the route and the slope decide the base. The figure includes the stone, any pipe, and hauling off the clay that comes out. If stumps sit in the line of the drive, see stump grinding in Greer; if brush does, land clearing in Greer. The grading and excavation service covers the pads and ditches around it.

What it includes

What that covers

  • Long drives on acreage. Cut, fabric, compacted base and crowned top course, with a ditch where the ground beside it is higher.
  • Truck and trailer pads. Gravel parking for work trucks, boats and campers, set on ground that drains.
  • Washouts and ruts. Crown rebuilt, water bars cut, soft spots dug out and the drive relaid.
  • Entrances and pipe. Culverts set under the entrance to the county or state standard.
Greer and nearby

Greer and the towns nearby

The gravel work runs along the county line in both directions. Spartanburg and its rural ring are a short run east, and Travelers Rest is up SC 290 to the northwest, with the same mix of new acreage drives and old washouts. Stump, demolition and clearing work in Greer itself is on the town page, and the service area page shows everywhere the trailer goes from Tryon.

How the work actually goes

You get Jordan. Not a crew he sent.

You call

You call or send two photos. Jordan looks at the job himself, on the ground or from your photos, rather than pricing it off a guess.

A number first

You get one figure before anything starts, with the hauling and the cleanup in it.

He runs the machine

Then he shows up with the machine and the trailer and does the work.

Ground left usable

Voids get filled and the ground gets graded back so you can pour, build, seed or just mow.

Questions about this work

Questions people ask

Not seeing yours? Call (828) 574-4474 and ask Jordan, or read the guides.

Which permit office covers my driveway entrance in Greer?

It depends on the road. County roads on the Greenville side go through Greenville County Public Works, which requires an encroachment permit for driveway tie-ins. Spartanburg County Roads and Bridges covers its side. Wade Hampton Boulevard, SC 14, SC 101 and SC 290 are state roads, so SCDOT issues that permit.

My new drive off SC 101 rutted in its first winter. Why?

Almost always because the stone was put straight on clay with no base. The clay softened, the tires pushed the gravel into it, and the ruts filled with water. The fix is to cut out the soft material, lay fabric and rebuild with a compacted base and a crowned top.

Can a gravel pad hold a camper or a boat trailer all year?

Yes, if it is built like a drive rather than just spread on the grass. Topsoil off, compacted subgrade, fabric, base stone and a top course. It also has to sit on ground that drains, with a fall away from the house. Jordan picks the spot with you.

How long is the drive out to Greer from Tryon?

About forty minutes down SC 14 or I-26, which is a normal run. A repair can be priced from two photos and the road name. A new drive on open ground gets a free visit so the route and the slope can be seen first.

Does the gravel wash into the road every time it rains?

On a drive that slopes down to the road, yes, if the water runs down the middle. A rebuilt crown and a water bar partway down turn the water off to the sides. Coarser stone on the bottom stretch and a pipe under the entrance finish it.
