Gravel Driveways in Landrum, SC
In Landrum a driveway often has to carry a truck and a loaded horse trailer, in the rain, without anyone getting stuck. That is a different drive from one that sees a sedan twice a day. Jordan builds farm and barn drives for the weight they will see, and fixes the foothill drives that wash out every spring.
Gravel Driveways in Landrum
Ten minutes from the yard, in horse country
Landrum is the first town over the state line from Tryon, down US 176, and it is close enough that a single afternoon's gravel work is worth the trip. The city grew up around a railroad depot in 1880 and still has its old downtown at the crossing of US 176 and SC 14. Around it, the ground is horse farms and small acreage in the foothills, at about a thousand feet.
That changes what a drive is for. The run from the road to the barn carries hay deliveries, the farrier, a gooseneck trailer on show mornings, and the vet at night. Those drives are the heart of the gravel work here, along with the ordinary ones in town that have simply worn out.
A drive that takes a loaded trailer
A truck and a two-horse trailer put a lot of weight on a small patch of ground, and the trailer wheels follow a tighter line than the truck's on every turn. A drive built for a car breaks up at the corners first, then in the wet spots, and then the trailer is sitting on its axles in the mud.
Jordan builds those drives with a thicker base, more width on the bends and a wider turnaround at the barn so nobody has to reverse a trailer in the dark. The sub-base is compacted in layers over fabric, and the top course is a stone that packs tight rather than rolling under a tire. Where the drive passes a gate or a water trough, the stone is carried right through the muddy spot rather than stopping short of it.
Washouts on the foothill grades
The ground around Landrum rolls, and most farm drives have at least one pitch where the water gets moving. By the bottom of that pitch the gravel is in the pasture and the drive is down to red clay. It gets topped up, and the next hard rain moves the new stone to the same place.
The fix is to take the water off the drive before it can carry anything. A crown or a side pitch sheds it sideways, and a dip or water bar across the grade sends it into the field at intervals. Where the drive runs below a bank, a ditch on the high side catches what comes off the slope. The guide on a gravel driveway washing out covers each of those pieces.
In-town drives off SC 14 and US 176
Not every job is a farm. The streets around downtown Landrum have older houses on smaller lots, and plenty of them still have a gravel drive that has sunk into the clay or spread into the yard. Those are quick jobs: the soft centre cut out, fabric and base put down, a crowned top course, and a clean edge against the lawn.
Some of these drives meet US 176 or SC 14 directly. Both are state roads, so the strip between the road and the lot is SCDOT right-of-way, and a new or widened entrance there is an SCDOT encroachment matter. The City of Landrum should also be asked before work starts inside the limits, since it reviews development in some parts of town.
County roads, pipe and SC811
Outside the city, the farm roads belong to Spartanburg County. Its Roads and Bridges department issues the driveway access permit, and once the entrance is staked its inspector sets the size of the pipe that goes under it. The county requires reinforced concrete pipe, backfilled and compacted with a crusher-run base over the top, and twenty feet is its standard residential width.
Before any of that is cut, SC811 is notified so the buried gas, water and power lines are marked. South Carolina law requires it, with three business days' notice. On a farm the lines to the barn, the well and the trough are private and will not be marked, so point them out when Jordan comes to look.
A figure, and the work around it
Two photos and the road are enough to price a repair in town. A barn drive gets a walk-through, because the turns, the gate and the wet spots all matter, and Landrum is close enough that the visit costs nothing. The number includes stone, pipe and hauling.
The drive is often one part of a bigger job on the same farm. A barn or run-in pad is covered under grading and excavation in Landrum. Fence-line stumps and any in the way of a wider drive come under stump grinding in Landrum. An overgrown lane back to a pasture is land clearing in Landrum.

What that covers
- Barn and trailer drives. Thicker base, wider bends and a turnaround at the barn, built for a loaded gooseneck.
- Washouts on grades. Crown, water bars and a high-side ditch so the stone stays on the drive.
- In-town drives. Sunken drives off the downtown streets cut out, based and crowned with a clean edge.
- Entrances and pipe. Reinforced concrete pipe set to the county standard, or to SCDOT's on US 176 and SC 14.

Questions people ask
Not seeing yours? Call (828) 574-4474 and ask Jordan, or read the guides.
Can a gravel drive in Landrum really hold a truck and horse trailer in winter?
Yes, if it is built for that weight. The difference is a thicker compacted base over fabric, extra width on the bends where the trailer wheels cut in, and a top stone that packs tight. A drive built for a car will break up at the corners first.
Who do I ask about a new entrance onto SC 14?
SC 14 and US 176 are state roads, so the strip beside them is SCDOT right-of-way and the encroachment permit comes from SCDOT. On a county road it is Spartanburg County Roads and Bridges, which sets the pipe size and requires reinforced concrete pipe under the entrance.
The drive washes out at the same spot every spring. Will more gravel fix it?
Not for long. The water is running down the grade and carrying the stone to the same place each time. A crown or side pitch, a water bar across the grade and a ditch on the high side take the water off the drive, and then the stone stays.
Does Jordan do small jobs in Landrum?
Yes. Landrum is ten minutes from Tryon, so a short in-town drive or a muddy stretch at a gate is a job in its own right. Send two photos and the road and you will get a figure, usually the same day.
Can the drive and the barn pad be done together?
They usually are. The pad is cut and built up first, then the drive is brought to it with the turnaround sized for a trailer. One quote covers both, with the stone, any pipe at the road and the hauling in the figure.
Other work he takes on
Most jobs end up being two or three of these at once, and they get quoted together.
