Gravel Driveways in Travelers Rest, SC
Travelers Rest is where Greenville County starts to climb, and a drive here often starts above the road or below it, rarely level with it. That slope is what makes or breaks a gravel drive. Jordan cuts new drives that shed water from the first day and rebuilds the ones that have been washing into the ditch.
Gravel Driveways in Travelers Rest
The last town before the mountains
Travelers Rest got its name from the drovers who rested here before taking the Buncombe road up into the Blue Ridge. It is still the last town on US 25 and US 276 before the climb, at about 1,100 feet. It was a small mill town on the Reedy River for most of a century, and then it grew by seventy percent between 2010 and 2020 as Greenville spread north.
Most of that growth is subdivisions with paved drives. The gravel work is on the ground around them. New houses on farm parcels off SC 414 and the Geer Highway, cabins up the valleys toward Marietta and Cleveland, and the old drives that came with an older house. Jordan runs down from Tryon in about forty minutes.
A new drive on a lot that leans
A lot at the foot of the mountains is seldom flat. The house sits up a bank from the road, or down in a hollow below it, and the drive has to climb or drop to get there. A drive cut straight up the fall line looks shortest and fails fastest, because every storm runs its length.
Jordan lays the route out across the slope where the lot allows, so the grade stays gentle. The topsoil and roots come off, and the subgrade is compacted and shaped with a crown or a pitch to the low side. Fabric, base and top course go down in layers. Where the drive cuts into the bank, a ditch on the high side catches the slope's water first. The guide on a gravel driveway washing out covers each piece.
The pipe at the road and Greenville County's rules
Most drives around Travelers Rest meet a road with a ditch beside it, so a pipe goes under the entrance. On a county road, Greenville County Public Works requires an encroachment permit for a driveway tie-in. It publishes guidelines for driveways with culverts, which set out how the pipe and the entrance are to be built, and it inspects the work afterwards.
US 25, US 276 and SC 414 are state roads, so the strip beside them is SCDOT right-of-way and the encroachment permit for a new entrance comes from SCDOT instead. Inside the city limits, the City of Travelers Rest should be asked as well. The permit is in the owner's name in each case; Jordan builds the entrance to whichever standard applies.
Washouts, potholes and the right stone
The repair calls are nearly all the same story. The gravel has gone to the bottom of the drive and the ditch, the top of the drive is bare clay, and the potholes fill with water in every rain. The owner has it topped up with pea gravel because that is what the yard sells, and it rolls off again.
The rebuild cuts out the soft spots and potholes rather than filling them, restores the crown, and uses an angular crusher-run stone that locks together under a tire. On the steepest stretch a water bar or dip is cut across the drive so the water leaves before it gets moving. Done that way, the drive stops being an annual chore.
SC811 and the river bottom
SC811 is notified at least three business days before any digging, and the utilities mark their lines for free. South Carolina law requires it, and the request is part of the job. On a new lot the services usually run along the line where the drive wants to go, which is why it matters.
Low ground along the Reedy River and its creeks can sit in a mapped flood zone. Greenville County's Floodplain Management office requires a permit for development in those areas, and the City of Travelers Rest has its own flood rules in the limits. If a drive has to cross that ground, ask before fill is brought in. On the hillside lots this does not come up.
A figure, and the jobs next to it
A repair can be priced from two photos and a road name. A new drive on a sloped lot gets a visit, because the route and the ditch decide the cost more than the length does. The estimate is free and the number includes the stone, the pipe and hauling off what comes out.
A drive that stays soft because the yard above it drains onto it is a yard drainage job in Travelers Rest first, and the two are usually done together. Stumps in the line of a new drive are ground on the same trip; see stump grinding in Travelers Rest. The grading and excavation service covers the pad at the end of the drive.

What that covers
- Drives on sloped lots. Route laid across the slope, crowned or pitched, with a ditch on the high side.
- Entrances and pipe. Culvert and entrance built to Greenville County's guidelines, or SCDOT's on state roads.
- Washouts rebuilt. Soft spots cut out, crown restored, angular stone that locks, water bars on the grade.
- Drives and pads together. A new drive tied into the house or shop pad as one job.

Who issues the permit for a driveway pipe on a county road near Travelers Rest?
Greenville County Public Works. It requires an encroachment permit for a driveway tie-in on a county road and publishes guidelines for driveways with culverts. On US 25, US 276 or SC 414 the road is SCDOT's and the encroachment permit comes from SCDOT. Inside the city, ask the City of Travelers Rest too.
My lot is above the road. Can a gravel drive work on that slope?
Yes, if it is laid out across the slope rather than straight up it, and built to shed water. A crown or a pitch to the low side and a ditch on the high side do most of it. A water bar on the steep stretch keeps the stone on the drive instead of in the ditch.
Why does pea gravel keep rolling off my drive?
Because round stone does not lock together. It rolls under a tire and washes with the first hard rain. An angular crusher-run stone packs into a surface that stays put. A rebuilt crown and water bars keep the water from carrying it anyway.
Does a drive near the Reedy River need anything extra?
If the ground is in a mapped flood zone, yes. Greenville County Floodplain Management requires a permit for development there, and the City of Travelers Rest has its own flood rules inside the limits. Ask before fill is brought in. Hillside lots away from the river are not affected.
How is the job priced?
Send two photos and your road for a repair. A new drive on a sloped lot gets a free visit from Jordan so the route and the ditch can be seen, since they decide the cost more than the length. The figure includes stone, pipe and hauling.
