Land Clearing in Forest City

Clearing in town, in the ETJ or in the county

Forest City has 7,377 people, more than any other town in Rutherford County, spread over about eight and a half square miles at roughly a thousand feet. It absorbed Alexander Mills in 1999, was picked for a large data center in 2010, and the Thermal Belt Rail Trail runs through it. That mix means clearing jobs range from a small grown-over lot on an old mill street to a wooded parcel on the edge of town headed for a new house.

Before any of it, find out whose rules apply. Forest City has its town limits and an extraterritorial jurisdiction around them, and land beyond that is the county's. The town's planning page links a county GIS map for exactly this check. Inside the town or its ETJ, the Planning and Zoning Director administers the zoning ordinance, and the Unified Development Ordinance was amended in December 2025. Outside, Rutherford County Planning is the office.

JB Stump Grinding & Land Management comes over from Tryon, and Forest City sits inside the normal working area. Clearing usually leads into a pad, a drive or a regrade with the same machines. Land clearing explains the method, and the land clearing cost guide sets out what moves the price before you send photos.

Local ground and rules

Forest City ground, debris and permits

Forest City clearing work

  • Overgrown in-town lots cleared
  • Edge-of-town parcels opened for a house
  • Old foundations and buried junk found
  • Root balls out under slabs and drives
  • Brush and limbs loaded and hauled
  • Stumps ground where yard will stay

Mill-village lots and old foundations

Alexander Mills' mill village is a listed historic district, and older streets like it have small lots set close together. A grown-over lot there often hides more than brush: an old foundation, buried fence, a well or a cistern, and trash from decades of nobody looking. Clearing is slow at the start, while the grapple finds what is under the growth. Mark what you know about, and say if the lot once had a house on it.

Stumps, brush and the county landfill

Brush and limbs can go to the yard waste area at the Rutherford County landfill, but stumps cannot, since the county says it is not permitted for them. So each stump on a Forest City lot needs a plan. Under a slab or a drive it comes out whole and goes to a private site willing to take it. Where the ground stays as yard, it is ground below grade on the spot. Stump grinding in Forest City covers that side.

Erosion, septic and burning

Erosion review in Forest City falls to the state, since neither the town nor the county has a program of its own, and DEQ's Asheville office wants a plan once more than an acre is opened. Septic permits for lots off sewer come from Foothills Health District. Burning cleared brush among close-set houses rarely works: state rules keep land-clearing burn piles 500 feet from occupied structures and 250 feet from a public road when the wind blows toward it.

How do I know if my lot is in Forest City's ETJ?

The town's planning page links a Rutherford County GIS map that shows whether an address is inside Forest City, in its extraterritorial jurisdiction or under the county. If it is in town or the ETJ, the Planning and Zoning Director is the person to ask about clearing and building.

Can I burn brush from clearing a lot in Forest City?

On most in-town lots it is hard to do legally. North Carolina requires land-clearing burn piles to sit 500 feet from occupied structures, among other conditions, and few town lots have that room. Hauling the brush is usually the practical answer.

Does the Rutherford County landfill take brush from clearing a Forest City lot?

Its yard waste area takes brush, limbs and leaves, and its page says stumps are refused. Check the county's current rules and charges before hauling a load yourself, and keep the brush free of trash, lumber and wire.

What should I send to get a land clearing quote in Forest City?

Photos from the road and from inside the growth, a rough outline of the area on a map or sketch, what the land is for, and how a truck and trailer get in. Mention old foundations, wells or buried junk you know about. With that and your town, Jordan can price it or ask to walk it.
