JB Stump Grinding & Land Management

What actually happens

The grinder’s cutting wheel works the stump down in passes until it is below the surrounding grade — usually four to eight inches under, deeper if you are planting or laying turf over it. The stump does not get pulled, so the ground around it is not torn up.

Getting to it is most of the job

Most residential stumps are somewhere awkward: inside a fenced back yard, between a house and a boundary, up against a patio or a drive. The machine is tracked and narrow, which is why gates and side passages are usually not a problem. Send a photo of the access and you will get a straight answer before anyone turns up.

What you are left with

A pile of grindings and clean ground. You can have the grindings raked back into the hole and topped with soil, or taken away entirely — say which when you book. Every one of Jordan’s Google reviews that mentions clean-up says the same thing, and that is deliberate.

Spartanburg itself

In-town Spartanburg is older housing stock with big street trees and not much room to work — back yards reached down a side passage, stumps hard against a drive or a foundation, curbside oaks and maples with services underneath. That is tracked-machine ground rather than truck-mounted ground. North of the city through Boiling Springs, Inman and Chesnee it opens out into newer subdivisions and former farmland, where the jobs are bigger and faster.

Stump removal in Spartanburg: when grinding is not enough

Grinding and full stump removal are not the same job. Grinding leaves the root system in the ground to rot down over several years. That is fine under a lawn. It is not fine if a footing, a post, a slab, a drain or a pool is going where the stump was, or if you are planting a replacement tree in the same spot. Removal means the excavator or the loader lifts the root ball out whole and it leaves on a trailer.

Removal is the bigger job. It leaves an open hole and disturbed ground around it, and the hole needs backfilling and settling afterwards. For most garden stumps grinding is the right answer and the cheaper one, and you will be told so. Say what is going on that ground afterwards and you will be told which one the job needs.

Big material is not a problem

The loader handles root balls a man cannot move, and the excavator handles the ones the loader cannot. Large hardwood stumps, storm-damaged root plates and stumps that have been in the ground for years all come out.

What it costs

Price comes down to how many stumps, how big they are, how hard they are to reach and what happens to the grindings. Here is what actually moves the number, written out plainly.

Still not sure which one you need?

The short answer is that grinding is right far more often than people expect, and the exceptions are all about what is going into the ground afterwards — the long answer, with the cases where removal is the only option, is here.
