Holly Stump Removal: Taking Out a Holly Hedge or Holly Tree for Good

By JB Stump Grinding & Land Management. Updated October 2026.

Hollies regrow from a stump cut near the ground, which is exactly how overgrown holly hedges are renewed on purpose, so cutting a holly down does not kill it. To get rid of one for good, grind the stump below grade; for a hedge, that means a line of small stumps ground one after another.

Cutting a holly down is how you renew it

The Henderson County NC State Extension center describes renewal pruning: most shrubs, hollies among them, can be cut back to a stump about eighteen inches high in late winter or early spring and will recover. Gardeners use that on purpose to rescue overgrown hedges. It also explains why a holly hedge sawn off at the ground to get rid of it greens up again by summer. The Forest Service silvics manual says young American holly trees usually sprout when their tops are removed. A holly stump left in place should be expected to try again.

Hedge stumps and holly trees

There are two different jobs here. A hedge leaves a row of small, often multi-stemmed stumps a few feet apart along a walk, a drive or the front of the house. A holly tree leaves one trunk. NC State says American holly reaches forty to sixty feet but grows slowly, and the silvics manual records about six feet in sixteen years under shade, so a big one is old. Its wood, by the same account, is tough, hard, close grained and one of the whitest woods known. A large holly stump is dense, but it grinds.

Spines, berries and clean-up

NC State describes American holly leaves as edged with long, sharp spines, and the leaves under a hedge stay prickly for a long time. Rake them out of the area before grinding so they do not end up in chips you plan to keep, or under topsoil where you want grass. Gloves help. NC State also notes that holly berries are poisonous to people and pets, with low severity, mostly from eating the fruit. If children or dogs use the yard, clear the berries along with the leaves.

Grinding along a foundation or walk

Hedges sit close to things: foundation walls, steps, walks, downspouts, hose bibs, irrigation heads and lighting cable. The tracked grinder fits standard yard gates and works each stump from the open side, taking it four to eight inches below grade. Mark irrigation and low-voltage lines before the day; 811 marks public utility lines, not private ones. Where a stump sits right against a wall, the wheel works to the wall face without touching it. Stump grinding near a foundation covers clearances.

How a hedge is quoted

Count the stumps, or measure the length of the row and the spacing. Measure the widest stump across at ground level. Take one photo along the row and one of the way in from the street or the drive. Say what is next to the hedge: a wall, a walk, a bed, a fence. A whole hedge is one job, quoted before any work starts. If the shrubs are still standing, send a photo of those too and we will talk through what makes sense.

After the hedge comes out

A removed hedge leaves a strip of ground-out holes and grindings along the house or walk. Mix the chips back with soil and top them, or have them hauled and fill with soil if you plan to replant straight away. Set new shrubs in undisturbed soil to one side of the old line where you can, and choose plants sized for the spot so they do not need cutting back hard. For a few small stumps you want to tackle with hand tools instead, see how to remove bush and shrub stumps.

Common Questions

Will a holly bush grow back if I cut it to the ground?

Very likely. NC State Extension's Henderson County center notes that most shrubs, hollies included, recover after being cut back to a stump, which is how overgrown hedges are renewed. To stop regrowth, grind the stump below grade or treat the fresh cut with a labeled herbicide, following the label.

Can a whole holly hedge be ground out in one visit?

Usually, yes. A row of hedge stumps is quoted and worked as one job, with the tracked grinder moving from stump to stump. What sets the time is the number and width of the stumps and what sits right next to them, such as walls, walks and lighting cable.

Can I dig out small holly stumps by hand instead?

Small ones, yes, with a mattock, a pruning saw and patience, cutting roots as you go. A mature holly or a long hedge is another matter, since the wood is dense and the roots hold firm. Decide by size and by how many there are.
