Stump grinding in Tigerville

Grinding and Removing Stumps in Tigerville, SC

North Greenville University started out in 1892 as North Greenville High School, the first high school in the northern part of the county, and it is still in Tigerville. Around the campus is rural foothill country. SC 414 runs east off US 25 into the community, and the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway crosses US 25 close by. Tigerville itself is a small census-designated place, 1,244 people at the 2020 count, sitting just under a thousand feet up.

From the yard in Tryon, Tigerville counts as a normal run, not an edge job. A single stump of fair size justifies the visit by itself, and several on the same land are better value per stump. Jordan prices every job personally, and two pictures usually do it: a close shot of the stump with a tape measure lying across it, and a wider one showing how a machine would get in. The main stump grinding page explains what happens on the day.

Poinsett Bridge and the steep side of the county

Poinsett Bridge, a stone bridge with a Gothic arch built in 1820 over Little Gap Creek, carried the Old Buncombe Road from Columbia toward Saluda Mountain. Tigerville is the nearest community, and the bridge now sits in a 400-acre heritage preserve. North of here the land climbs, and yards and drives climb with it. A stump on a bank is slower to set up on than one on a lawn. Know where your line is if you back onto public land. See steep slope stump grinding.

Virginia pine on old fields

N.C. State Extension says Virginia pine is common in old fields at the higher elevations of the Piedmont and the mountains, grows in poor, dry and clay soils, and is prone to wind damage. It is a smaller pine, usually eight to fourteen inches through the trunk. Where it grows on old fields around Tigerville, the stumps it leaves are modest in size and often come several at a time, after wind takes a few trees from one stand. Several small stumps in one setup go quickly. A tree that tipped over brings its root plate up with it, and that is lifted out whole.

Locust at the field edge

If you have black locust on your land, N.C. State Extension notes two things about it. Its wood is naturally rot resistant, so an old locust stump stays hard. And it sends out long underground root suckers, putting up shoots from the roots. Grinding takes the stump below grade, but locust roots can still send up shoots around it for a while. Mowing or cutting them back as they appear wears the roots down. The guide on how to stop stump sprouts covers the options.

Is Tigerville close enough for JB to grind a single stump?

Yes. It sits inside the normal working area, so one stump of reasonable size makes a visit worthwhile. Several stumps on the same land, or a neighbor's added to the visit, bring the cost per stump down, because the loading and the drive are shared. Send two photos and your road for a number.

Black locust stumps on my Tigerville land keep sending up shoots. Will grinding stop that?

Grinding stops the stump itself from sprouting, because the stump is gone below grade. Locust is different from most trees: N.C. State Extension says it puts up shoots from its roots, so some may still come up around the spot. Keep mowing or cutting them back and the roots run out of steam.

Do pine stumps on a wooded Tigerville lot need to come out whole before I build?

Only where something is going on top. Under a footing, a slab, a drive or a septic line, the stump needs digging out, root mass and all, by excavator or loader, then the hole is filled and allowed to settle. Stumps that will end up under lawn or woods can simply be ground below grade. Send a sketch of what goes where.

How it works

How a Job Runs

Send two photos

One of the stump with something for scale, one of the way in, plus your town. Call, use the form, or email the photos.

Get your quote

Jordan quotes every job himself. Estimates are free, and you have the number before any work starts.

Lines get marked

Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them. 811 does not mark private lines, so point out irrigation, lighting, invisible fence and septic parts.

The grind

The stump is ground in passes to below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Tell us first if you are planting or laying turf and it goes deeper.

Clean ground

Grindings are raked back into the hole and topped, left in a pile for your beds, or hauled off. Any marks on the lawn get raked.
