Land Clearing in Chesnee

Open country, and the growth that takes it back

Chesnee was a land company town before it was a city. The Chesnee Land Company bought the ground early in the twentieth century, a railroad excursion ran over the new rails in 1909, and the town was chartered in 1911 where US 221 crosses SC 11. Much of the country around it is still open farm ground, and open ground that stops being worked fills in quickly at the edges. Clearing here is mostly about getting it back.

The jobs are bigger in area than in-town work but simpler to reach. A grown-over field edge, a hedgerow that has swallowed a fence, a homesite in a stand of young pine, a wind-thrown tree with its root plate standing up. Machines can usually drive straight to the work, so the variables are how much growth there is, how thick it is, and whether the debris is hauled, stacked or burned.

JB Stump Grinding & Land Management comes from Tryon, and Chesnee sits inside the normal working area, on the SC 11 side of the county. Clearing and the dirt work after it are quoted together. For the full method see land clearing and lot clearing, then send photos from the road, from out in the field and of the gate a trailer would come through.

Local ground and rules

Chesnee rules, county lines and storm debris

Chesnee clearing work

  • Field edges pushed back to the fence
  • Hedgerows cleared roots and all
  • Homesites opened in young pine
  • Root plates lifted and holes filled
  • Field stumps ground below the bush hog
  • Debris hauled, logs stacked on request

Which county is your land in?

A small part of Chesnee extends east into Cherokee County, and rural land near town can sit on either side of the line. That matters, because the office that reviews land disturbance, the stormwater rules and the debris sites all follow the county. Check your tax bill or the county GIS before calling anyone. Inside the city, start with the City of Chesnee. Septic permits are the one constant: SCDES handles them in both counties.

Hedgerows and field edges

Field edges along SC 11 and the back roads tend to grow a wall of saplings, vines and brush on the old fence. Where the field will be mowed, the grapple pulls that growth out roots and all, and the stumps of anything larger are ground below grade so a bush hog passes over them. Expect sprouts from roots left deeper, and plan to mow them down through the first seasons. The guide on clearing for a fence line covers the wire and post side.

Wind-thrown trees and root plates

Wind has more reach across open fields. A tree that topples whole tips up a slab of roots and soil and leaves a crater beside it. Grinding by itself cannot deal with that. The trunk and limbs are loaded, the loader or excavator pries the root plate free so it can leave on a trailer, and the crater is filled level. Mention in the photos whether the tree was felled or blew over. Storm stump and root ball removal explains that job.

Do I notify anyone before burning cleared brush outside Chesnee?

Yes. Outside city limits South Carolina requires notifying the Forestry Commission before an outdoor burn, online or by phone, and land-clearing fires beside woods, brush or grass are covered. They must also meet SCDES air rules. Inside Chesnee the city sets the rules, so ask City Hall.

My land near Chesnee is in Cherokee County. Does that change anything?

It changes which county office you ask about land disturbance and where debris can go, so tell Jordan which county the parcel is in when you call. The clearing itself is done the same way, and septic permits come from SCDES on either side of the line.

Can a hedgerow near Chesnee be cleared without losing the fence?

Often part of it can be saved, depending on how far the wire has grown into the wood. Growth is pulled from both sides with the grapple, and posts worth keeping are worked around. Point out the stretches you care about in the photos so the quote reflects it.

Is clearing a field near Chesnee priced by the acre?

Not here. Acreage is one factor, but the thickness of the growth, the size of the stumps, trailer access and where the debris goes matter as much. Photos from the road and inside the field, plus a rough outline of the area, give Jordan enough to price it.
