Grinding and Removing Stumps in Spindale, NC
Spencer Mills opened in 1916, and Spindale grew up around it as a mill town. Stonecutter Mills followed in 1920 and ran until 1999, the last of the textile mills to close. The town was incorporated in 1923, and in 1939 a local act of the General Assembly nearly doubled its area. That history is still on the ground: mill-village houses on modest lots, set close together, with yard trees that have had a long time to grow.
Spindale sits on US 221A between Forest City and Rutherfordton, with US 74A crossing the south side of town, and it is squarely inside our normal working area in Rutherford County. The grinding is the same as anywhere: the stump taken down in passes below grade with a tracked machine, the chips raked back in or carted off. What changes here is how you get to it, and what the rules allow if you were thinking of burning it. The method is laid out on the stump grinding page.
Between two houses to the back yard
Getting a machine to the back of a Spindale lot usually means going between two houses. That is the reason for a narrow grinder on tracks: an ordinary yard gate is wide enough for it. On the rare lot where the opening is narrower still, taking out one fence panel and putting it back afterward may be the answer, and nobody touches your fence without asking. Measure the narrowest point, whether that is between the gate posts or between two walls, and send the number with a photo. If steps, a shed or a wall crowds the stump, show the whole spot, not just the cut face.
Thinking of burning it? Check first
Rutherford County's open-burning page says that inside Spindale, burning needs a permit from the Spindale fire department. Next door, Forest City and Rutherfordton do not allow open burning at all under their town rules. A stump is also slow, smoky fuel compared with a pile of dry brush. Rules change, so call the fire department before you light anything. Grinding avoids the question: the stump is reduced to chips in one visit. Our guide to burning yard debris in NC and SC covers the wider rules.
A college named for the climate
Isothermal Community College is in Spindale, and its name comes from the thermal belt, a band of foothills that runs noticeably milder than the country around it. WNCW, the public radio station, broadcasts from the campus. For stump work the season matters less than the ground. Grinding works in every month. On a dry lawn the tracks leave little behind; on a soaked one, waiting out a few dry days keeps the yard tidier. Winter photos, with the leaves down, show the stump and the way in clearly.

Spindale Stump Questions
The big questions each have a full guide. Shorter answers are on the FAQ page.
Can I burn a stump in my yard in Spindale instead of grinding it?
Check before you try. Rutherford County's permit page says open burning inside Spindale needs a permit from the Spindale fire department, and the town's rules are what count, so ask them what is allowed. If the answer does not suit, grinding takes the stump below grade in one visit with no smoke and leaves grindings you can rake back into the hole.
How narrow a side yard can you get through in Spindale?
Most of them. The machine is built narrow, on tracks, to pass through an ordinary garden gate. If your gap is narrower, one fence section may need lifting out and refitting, and you would be asked before that happens. Measure between gate posts, walls or steps at the tightest place and send it with a photo. That tells Jordan ahead of time whether the way in works.
Do you grind stumps in Spindale and Forest City on the same trip?
Yes. The two towns run into each other along US 221A, and both are inside our normal area. If a neighbor or a relative in Forest City has stumps as well, say so when you call. One trip and one setup for both keeps the cost of each stump down.

How a Job Runs
Send two photos
One of the stump with something for scale, one of the way in, plus your town. Call, use the form, or email the photos.
Get your quote
Jordan quotes every job himself. Estimates are free, and you have the number before any work starts.
Lines get marked
Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them. 811 does not mark private lines, so point out irrigation, lighting, invisible fence and septic parts.
The grind
The stump is ground in passes to below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Tell us first if you are planting or laying turf and it goes deeper.
Clean ground
Grindings are raked back into the hole and topped, left in a pile for your beds, or hauled off. Any marks on the lawn get raked.
