Stump grinding in Roebuck

Grinding and Removing Stumps in Roebuck, SC

Roebuck is named for Benjamin Roebuck, an officer in the Revolutionary War, and some of that era is still standing. Walnut Grove Plantation, a farmhouse built in 1765 on a land grant from King George III, is preserved with its schoolhouse and outbuildings. Smith's Tavern, a stagecoach stop from 1790, looks over SC-215, which was once Blackstock Road. Around them Roebuck has filled in, from about 1,725 people in 2000 to 2,357 in 2020, so older homeplaces with big trees sit near much newer lots.

Coming from Tryon, Roebuck is ordinary territory for JB Stump Grinding & Land Management, not a stretch. A lone stump of decent size makes a fine job by itself, and a field corner or a few neighbors on one road bring the price per stump down. Lay a tape across the cut, take a picture, take another of the gate, and send both with the name of your road. What the yard looks like afterward is shown on the stump grinding service page.

Black walnut stumps and juglone

Walnut Grove takes its name from a grove of black walnuts that Kate Moore Barry, a daughter of the house, is credited with planting. NC State Extension says black walnut grows well on rich bottom land and notes two things that matter after one is cut. It has a very deep taproot. And its leaves, stems and roots contain juglone, which holds back some plants, among them tomatoes, blueberries, apples, azaleas and peonies. Grinding takes the stump below grade, but the roots stay. Pick a tolerant plant for that spot, and keep walnut grindings out of the vegetable patch to be safe.

Fence rows and field corners off the old cattle road

SC-215, the old Blackstock Road, was a main route for driving cattle from Columbia to Asheville. Where farm ground around Roebuck still has fence rows, field corners and lanes, a tracked machine can follow them to the stump. Fence-row wood often has old wire grown into it, which is worth mentioning before the cutting wheel finds it. Open ground makes the grinding quick. Red clay that has just been soaked will rut, so a few dry days first keeps the field tidy. Long runs are covered on pasture and fence line stump grinding.

No town hall: ask the county

Roebuck is a census-designated place, not a town, so there is no town office to ask. Questions about setbacks or the strip along the road go to Spartanburg County, and US-221 and SC-215 are state highways with their own right-of-way. Before the wheel goes near buried public utilities, 811 has them located. Anything private, such as a pipe from the well, irrigation or a cable to a workshop, stays unmarked, so walk Jordan through where those run. Neighboring communities are listed with the rest of Spartanburg County.

Can I plant a garden where a black walnut stump was ground in Roebuck?

Choose the plants with care. NC State Extension says black walnut roots contain juglone, which holds back sensitive plants such as tomatoes, blueberries and azaleas, and grinding leaves the deeper roots in the ground. Grass or a tolerant shrub is the safer choice for that spot. Your county extension office can suggest plants that cope with juglone.

Is Roebuck close enough to Tryon for a one-stump job?

Yes. Roebuck is inside the normal working area, so a single decent stump is worth the visit. If you have several, or a neighbor down the road has one too, put them in the same visit, because the machine is already unloaded. Quotes are free and come before any work.

Can you reach a stump at the back of a field in Roebuck with no driveway to it?

Usually. The grinder is on tracks and crosses firm grass and pasture without much trouble. Send a picture of the gate and the route, and say if there is a ditch, a creek crossing or a steep bank on the way. After heavy rain it is better to wait a few days than to rut a field.

How it works

How a Job Runs

Send two photos

One of the stump with something for scale, one of the way in, plus your town. Call, use the form, or email the photos.

Get your quote

Jordan quotes every job himself. Estimates are free, and you have the number before any work starts.

Lines get marked

Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them. 811 does not mark private lines, so point out irrigation, lighting, invisible fence and septic parts.

The grind

The stump is ground in passes to below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Tell us first if you are planting or laying turf and it goes deeper.

Clean ground

Grindings are raked back into the hole and topped, left in a pile for your beds, or hauled off. Any marks on the lawn get raked.
