Land Clearing in Campobello, SC
Old fields, fence rows and wooded corners around Campobello cleared back to usable ground, with the roots handled to suit what comes next. Close to home from Tryon, and priced from photos.
Taking back the beautiful field
Founded in 1840, Campobello took a name meaning beautiful field, and most of the land around it was farmed at one time or another. The town is small, centered where US 176 crosses SC 357, with SC 11 along its north side heading over to I-26. Past the last house the clearing work is mostly reclaiming: old fields grown up in saplings, fence rows turned into hedges, and woodland edges that have crept out across pasture.
Reclaimed ground can go two ways. If it will be mowed, grazed or hunted, the roots can often stay, and the growth is cleared or mulched in place, which keeps the soil covered. If it will carry a house, a shop or a drive, the stumps and root balls have to come out. The guide to forestry mulching vs land clearing lays out how to choose, and many tracts here need some of each.
Campobello counted 449 people in 2000 and 675 in 2020, small numbers but steady growth, and a new house on old farm ground always starts with clearing. The town is the second down US 176 from Tryon, close enough that a day of field work is easy to schedule. Send photos from the road and from inside the growth, and see land clearing and lot clearing for how it is done.

The South Pacolet bottoms
Campobello lies along the South Pacolet River, and low ground near any stream is the part of a tract to treat differently. Banks hold together because of the roots in them, so growth nearest the water is cut without pulling the stumps, or left alone. Silt off a bare field reaches a stream quickly. Before clearing toward a creek, ask Spartanburg County what buffer applies, and keep a strip of cover between the work and the water until you have the answer.
Lots that run down to Lake Bowen
If your land runs down to Lake Bowen, the shoreline is probably not yours. Spartanburg Water owns and maintains a buffer around the reservoir up to a set elevation, and adjoining owners need its permit before changing natural vegetation there, unless the work is specifically exempted. That covers brush as well as trees. So clearing a lake lot stops at the buffer line until the Lake Bowen Wardens' Office has answered. Above that line the lot is cleared like any other.
Septic and wells on old farm ground
Most land outside town runs on a well and a septic system, and in South Carolina the septic permit comes from SCDES. On an old farm, the open, well drained rise that suits a drain field is often the easiest place to clear, which is exactly why it should wait until SCDES has looked at it. Old wells, cisterns and dump piles also turn up in grown-over farm corners. Flag anything you know about and mention it with your photos.

Can I clear brush on my Lake Bowen lot near Campobello?
Not inside the buffer without a permit. Spartanburg Water owns a strip of land around the lake and requires adjoining owners to get its approval before changing natural vegetation there. Call the Lake Bowen Wardens' Office before any brush comes out near the water. Above the buffer, the usual county rules apply.
Is it worth clearing an old field in Campobello instead of mulching it?
It depends on the end use. If the field will be mowed or grazed, mulching, or clearing with the roots left in, is usually enough and quicker. If a house, shop, drive or septic field is going on it, the roots must come out, so it is a clearing job. Many tracts get both.
Who handles septic permits for a new house near Campobello SC?
SCDES, the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services. Get in touch before the site is cleared so the area they will evaluate for the drain field is not rutted or dug through, and plan the house and drive around their answer.
Do field stumps in Campobello need pulling or grinding?
Grinding is usually enough for a field. Taken below the depth a bush hog or a disk reaches, a ground stump causes no more trouble and the soil stays put. Pull them only where something will be built. Stump grinding in Campobello has more on field and fence-row stumps.
