Stump grinding in Ellenboro

Grinding and Removing Stumps in Ellenboro, NC

Ellenboro exists because of a railroad grade. In 1880 the Seaboard Air Line built a line from Wilmington to Rutherfordton, and a settlement sprang up at the highest point on it. In 1884 a Seaboard engineer, John Robinson, proposed naming the town for his daughter Ellen, who was dying of a fever, and he gave the town a brass bell in return. The bell hung in the school for years and then went missing after a new school was built.

Ellenboro is still small, 723 people at the 2020 census, and farming shaped it. A young agriculture teacher, A.B. Bushong, organized the first Colfax Free Fair on the school grounds in 1928 to show off a year of crops, canning and handiwork. Stump work here follows the land: field edges, fence rows and long drives, where there are usually several stumps, not one. Ellenboro is inside our normal working area, and the grinding itself is described on the stump grinding page.

Old fields going back to pine

NC State Extension notes that loblolly pine commonly spreads into old fields by seeding itself. Leave a field corner unmown for a few years and young pines move in. When they are cut, each one leaves a stump, and a field that has gone to pine can hold a lot of them. A mature pine does not sprout back from the stump or the roots, so grinding below grade is the end of it. Our pine stump removal guide covers resin, rot speed and the wide shallow roots.

A row of stumps, one trip

A line of stumps along a field edge is about as efficient as stump work gets. The grinder is unloaded once and tracks itself from one stump to the next, so every stump after the first costs far less to add. Walk the row before you call. Count the stumps, put a tape across the biggest one where it meets the ground, and note anything hiding in the grass: a rock, an old post, a strand of wire. A photo taken down the row from one end tells Jordan most of what he needs.

Pasture ground and stock

If your stump is in pasture or hay ground near Ellenboro rather than a lawn, tell us how the field gate opens, whether stock needs moving first, and whether the grindings can stay where they fall or should be raked into the holes so a mower can pass. Planning a post, a barn footing or a replacement tree right where a stump stands? Then the roots come out whole rather than being ground. For field and fence work, read about grinding pasture and fence-line stumps.

Is it worth grinding a whole field of pine stumps near Ellenboro at once?

Usually, yes. One trip covers the loading and the setup, and the grinder moves from stump to stump under its own power. Count the stumps, measure the widest, and photograph both the field and the gate. Jordan will quote the lot as one job, and you will have the number before any work starts.

Can you grind stumps on farms in the Colfax area outside Ellenboro?

Yes. Colfax, Ellenboro and the farm roads between them are in Rutherford County, inside our normal area. Send a photo of each stump or of the whole row, a photo of the way in from the road, and anything a stranger would not know, such as a wet bottom at the low end of the field or a private water line.

A pine blew over in our Ellenboro field and pulled its roots up. Do you grind that?

Not as a rule. When a pine goes over and drags its roots out of the soil, there is a raised disc of roots and dirt with a crater beside it. The track loader's grapple or the excavator picks that up, it goes away on a trailer, and the crater gets backfilled. A stump still anchored in the ground gets ground like any other. One photo of the whole thing shows which you have.

How it works

How a Job Runs

Send two photos

One of the stump with something for scale, one of the way in, plus your town. Call, use the form, or email the photos.

Get your quote

Jordan quotes every job himself. Estimates are free, and you have the number before any work starts.

Lines get marked

Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them. 811 does not mark private lines, so point out irrigation, lighting, invisible fence and septic parts.

The grind

The stump is ground in passes to below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Tell us first if you are planting or laying turf and it goes deeper.

Clean ground

Grindings are raked back into the hole and topped, left in a pile for your beds, or hauled off. Any marks on the lawn get raked.
