Stump grinding in Bostic

Grinding and Removing Stumps in Bostic, NC

Before it was Bostic, this place was called Black Oak, and it took its present name from George T. Bostic, a local businessman. It grew as a railroad town. The Seaboard line changed crews here with the old Clinchfield, CSX still runs a yard just northwest of town, and a Family Lines caboose sits on display in the middle of it all. The town covers less than a square mile and gets by with three caution signals and no red lights.

Around that small center the lots get bigger. George W. Jones started Valdesian Nurseries beside the railroad in Bostic in 1904, and in less than twenty years it grew from two acres to two hundred, raising ornamental and rare plants for the wholesale trade. Bostic is a Rutherford County town well within the area we cover. Whether the stump is in a town yard or along a drive outside it, the way it is ground and cleaned up is set out on the stump grinding page.

Black locust in the fence rows

NC State Extension lists fence rows and clay banks among the places black locust turns up, and two of its notes matter here. The wood is naturally rot resistant, which is why it was split for fence posts, and the tree sends out long underground root suckers. So a locust stump on a Bostic fence line rots slowly if left. Grinding takes the stump below grade, but roots already out in the field can push up shoots for a while, so keep mowing or pulling them. Our black locust stump guide goes further.

Old places along Bostic-Sunshine Highway

Out along Bostic-Sunshine Highway, the crossroads at Washburn is a historic district of its own, with the Washburn store, a barn, a funeral home and family houses built from 1915 on. Bostic also has the Bostic Charge Parsonage and the Melton-Davis House on the National Register. Old houses come with old trees, and those come down next to things that cannot be replaced: stone steps, walls, wells, outbuildings. Point out anything that must not be touched, and send a photo from a few steps back so the whole setting shows.

Several stumps, one setup

A Bostic job outside town is often several stumps spread along a drive or a field edge. That is a good shape for a job: one trip, one setup, and the tracked grinder walks itself from stump to stump. Tell us how many there are and how wide the biggest one is, and photograph the gate the machine will come through. If one of them has to come out whole for a post or a footing, say which, and our page on full stump removal explains what that leaves behind.

Will a ground-out locust stump in Bostic send up sprouts?

The stump itself should not, once it is ground below grade. Black locust also spreads by shoots from its roots, though, and roots already out in the yard or field can push up suckers for a while after. Mow or pull them as they show. Tell us it is a locust when you send the photo, so the depth can be planned.

Can you grind a stump next to an old stone wall or outbuilding in Bostic?

Usually. The grinder cuts the stump away where it stands and does not pull on the roots, so a wall or a foundation beside it is not levered up. The wheel works up to the stone and stops short of it. Send one close photo and one from a few steps back, and point out anything loose or fragile.

Can neighbors in Bostic and Ellenboro share one stump grinding trip?

Yes, and it is worth asking. Bostic and Ellenboro are close together in Rutherford County, and covering both on one run means the loading and the drive happen once. Send photos from both properties in the same message, with the road each one is on, and say how many stumps are at each.

How it works

How a Job Runs

Send two photos

One of the stump with something for scale, one of the way in, plus your town. Call, use the form, or email the photos.

Get your quote

Jordan quotes every job himself. Estimates are free, and you have the number before any work starts.

Lines get marked

Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them. 811 does not mark private lines, so point out irrigation, lighting, invisible fence and septic parts.

The grind

The stump is ground in passes to below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Tell us first if you are planting or laying turf and it goes deeper.

Clean ground

Grindings are raked back into the hole and topped, left in a pile for your beds, or hauled off. Any marks on the lawn get raked.
