Stump grinding in Mountain Home

Grinding and Removing Stumps in Mountain Home, NC

Mountain Home is built up in a way most of rural Henderson County is not. The 2020 census counted almost every resident as living in an urban area, and the community fits into under four square miles between Balfour to the south and Mud Creek on the northeast side. US 25 Business, the Asheville Highway, runs up the middle, and NC 191 forms the southwest edge. Put that together and you get small lots, fenced back yards and neighbors on both sides.

On lots like that the grinding is the quick part. The work is in getting the machine to the stump without marking anything on the way. Our grinder is a Carlton on tracks, narrow enough for a standard yard gate. If a gate in Mountain Home turns out tighter than usual, lifting out a fence panel and putting it back is sometimes the answer, and you would be asked before anyone touches it. The tight access stump grinding page covers side yards and gates.

Back yards fenced on every side

A fenced yard means the stump is close to things: a shed, a car, a window, a hot tub, the neighbor's fence. A grinding wheel throws chips, so say what is near the stump when you send photos and the setup is planned around it. Measure the gate opening between the posts and include that number too. Afterwards the chips go back in the hole under a soil cap, sit in a heap by your beds, or leave on the trailer. Our guide to stump grinding in a fenced back yard goes through it step by step.

Asheville Highway frontage and rental property

Lots along US 25 Business in Mountain Home include businesses and rental property, and stumps there sit at the edge of parking areas, along a frontage or behind a building. Several can be ground in one visit, with the machine placed so chips fly away from cars and glass. If the tree stood near the road, find out whether that strip is part of the property or the road. A stump in the state right-of-way is a question for the NCDOT district office, not something to settle on the day.

Low ground by Mud Creek

Mud Creek, a tributary of the French Broad, forms the northeast edge of Mountain Home, and the low yards near it stay wet longer than the higher streets. A tracked machine is easy on a firm lawn. On soaked ground it can leave marks that take raking to fix, so a few dry days are worth waiting for. 811 locates the utility companies' lines ahead of any grinding near them. It leaves irrigation, low-voltage lighting, invisible fence and septic lines unmarked, so show us those. Tree still up? Send a photo and ask.

My Mountain Home back yard is fenced on all four sides. Will a panel have to come out?

Probably not. The grinder is narrow and tracked, and most yard gates let it through. Measure the opening between the gate posts and send that number with a photo of the gate. If it is unusually narrow, taking one panel out and refitting it afterwards is the fallback, and that only happens with your say-so.

Can several stumps along a parking area on the Asheville Highway in Mountain Home be done at once?

Yes. A frontage or a lot edge is a good one-visit job, and the cost per stump drops as the number goes up. Send a photo of each stump with something for scale, a wide shot of the site, and say when the lot is quietest. If any stump is near the road, check first whether that strip is yours or the state's.

With a small Mountain Home yard, can the grindings be hauled away instead of left in the hole?

Yes. Hauling is quoted as its own line, because it means loading and another machine movement. Most owners of small yards still have the chips raked into the hole and topped, which leaves the spot level and is included in the price. Ask for a pile if you want some for beds. Neighbors in Balfour or Hendersonville with stumps of their own? Henderson County work can share the visit.

How it works

How a Job Runs

Send two photos

One of the stump with something for scale, one of the way in, plus your town. Call, use the form, or email the photos.

Get your quote

Jordan quotes every job himself. Estimates are free, and you have the number before any work starts.

Lines get marked

Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them. 811 does not mark private lines, so point out irrigation, lighting, invisible fence and septic parts.

The grind

The stump is ground in passes to below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Tell us first if you are planting or laying turf and it goes deeper.

Clean ground

Grindings are raked back into the hole and topped, left in a pile for your beds, or hauled off. Any marks on the lawn get raked.
