Septic Systems in Campobello

Public water, private wastewater

Public water reached Campobello long ago: the Inman-Campobello Water District was created in 1954 to serve the two towns and the country around them. Its website describes water service only. Having a water meter at the road does not mean having a sewer line, and where no sewer reaches, the house depends on a septic system of its own. That system has to be permitted before it goes in and repaired with a permit when it fails.

Septic permits in this state are issued by SCDES, the Department of Environmental Services. The law also has the department inspect a share of finished systems at random, and it treats a system built differently from its permit as a possible violation. The site evaluation decides the type and the layout. The machine work comes after.

JB Stump Grinding & Land Management does that machine work with its excavator and tracked loader, from the tank hole to the last trench. Read the septic systems page for the range of it. Campobello is a short run from Tryon through Landrum, close to home, and Jordan quotes once he has the permit and a look at the ground and the access.

Local ground and rules

What a Campobello septic job runs into

Septic work around Campobello

  • Systems for new houses on farmland
  • Septic for manufactured home sites
  • Failed drain fields replaced
  • Tanks, lids and baffles replaced
  • Crushed and separated lines repaired
  • Ground graded back afterward

No power to a new house site without it

South Carolina ties electricity to the sewage plan. Under state law, a power supplier may not connect temporary or permanent service to a new site for a site-built, modular or mobile home until the county or town issues its permit, and that permit cannot be issued without approval of the method of sewage disposal. On a farm being split into a house lot, the septic permit is therefore near the front of the schedule, not the back. Apply early, and keep the area set aside for the drain field clear of trucks and stockpiles.

Placing a manufactured home

Manufactured homes are common on country land, and the law has a line about them too: the buyer or owner is the one who must get the septic permit, and a copy goes to the mobile home seller. So before the home is delivered, the lot needs an approved spot for the tank and drain field, and the home's pad has to stay clear of it. Driveway, pad and septic layout are worth planning together. Clearing the pad and drive is part of the same visit; see land clearing.

Low ground along the South Pacolet

Campobello sits along the South Pacolet River, and ground near a river or a branch can stay wet for long stretches of the year. A drain field needs soil that drains, and N.C. State Extension lists trenches dug in wet soil, which smears and seals the trench walls, among the causes of failure. That is why the evaluation, not the look of the ground in a dry August, decides where a field goes. Woody growth near the field matters too; see stump grinding near a septic system.

Does Campobello have sewer, or will I need a septic tank?

Ask Campobello Town Hall about your street. The Inman-Campobello Water District, which serves the area, describes water service on its site, not sewer. Where no sewer line reaches, a house relies on a septic system permitted by SCDES.

Can I get power to a new house site near Campobello before the septic permit?

Not under South Carolina law. A power supplier cannot connect temporary or permanent service to a new building site until the county or town issues its permit, and that permit needs approval of the sewage disposal method first. Apply for the septic permit early.

I'm putting a mobile home on land near Campobello. Who gets the septic permit?

You do. South Carolina law puts the duty on the purchaser or owner to get the septic permit and to give a copy to the mobile home seller. Have the site evaluated and the tank and drain field located before the home is delivered and the pad is set.

Can a drain field go in a pasture near the South Pacolet River near Campobello?

Only if the soil passes the SCDES evaluation. Ground near a river can stay wet much of the year, and a drain field needs soil that drains. The evaluation decides where a field can go and what kind of system suits it. Keep vehicles and livestock feeders off the chosen area once it is marked.
