Stump grinding in Arden

Grinding and Removing Stumps in Arden, NC

Before it was Arden, this corner of southern Buncombe County was called Shufordsville. The new name came from the Forest of Arden in Shakespeare's As You Like It. Arden lies between Skyland and Fletcher, up against the Henderson County line, and its post office also serves Royal Pines and Avery Creek. Old and new sit side by side: the Oak Park Historic District, begun in 1927 and cut short by the 1929 crash, Christ School on a 500-acre campus, and subdivisions in between.

Arden marks the top of our map, and the yard is a long way south in Tryon. A visit up here works out when it is paired with other jobs close by, and a batch of stumps is a better fit than a lone one. Fletcher, across the county line, sits inside our normal area, so Arden work can share a trip with it. Wide stumps, cramped yards and lots where grinding turns into clearing or grading are where the drive pays off.

Oak Park and the older streets

More than fifteen houses from the late 1920s still stand in Oak Park, and trees planted beside houses that age have had the better part of a century to grow. That means wide stumps, a root flare that runs under walks and walls, and sometimes a stump hard against a foundation. The cutting wheel is worked away from the structure, and the depth near a wall is agreed first. Read stump grinding near a foundation before booking one that close.

Subdivision yards and HOA common ground

Newer neighborhoods in Arden often have an owners' association, and some have trees on common ground or along the entrance. When several dead or storm-damaged trees come down at once, the stumps make a natural single job. Ask your association whether it wants notice before a machine comes in. If neighbors on one street each have a stump, pooling them is how work this far up the map adds up. The commercial stump grinding page covers HOA work.

Who to ask before a stump comes out whole

Arden is unincorporated, so the rules that touch a bigger job come from Buncombe County and, in a subdivision, from the association. Grinding a stump in your own yard is the simple case. If a root ball is being dug out near a creek, or the stump work is part of clearing or grading a lot, check with Buncombe County's planning office first. Utility-owned lines are located through 811 ahead of grinding nearby; anything private, from a sprinkler pipe to a lighting cable, needs pointing out by you. Tree not down yet? Send a photo and ask.

Will you come up to Arden to grind a single stump?

Ask. Arden sits at the northern edge of our map, so one small stump goes better with company: a big stump, a handful of them, or other work nearby that can share the trip. Send two photos and your street, and Jordan will give you a straight answer and a number.

Our Arden HOA wants every stump on the common ground done in one go. How is that quoted?

As one job. Photograph each stump next to a tape or a boot, mark them on a rough sketch of the grounds, and show how a machine gets onto the common area. The first stump carries the trip and the setup, so a long list costs far less per stump than a few called in one at a time.

Can a stump right beside the wall of an older Arden house be ground?

Usually. The grinder is set up so the wheel works away from the wall, and the depth beside the foundation is agreed before starting. Say if there is a footing, a drain or a pipe close to the stump, and send a photo that shows the gap between stump and wall. The main stump grinding page explains the method.

How it works

How a Job Runs

Send two photos

One of the stump with something for scale, one of the way in, plus your town. Call, use the form, or email the photos.

Get your quote

Jordan quotes every job himself. Estimates are free, and you have the number before any work starts.

Lines get marked

Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them. 811 does not mark private lines, so point out irrigation, lighting, invisible fence and septic parts.

The grind

The stump is ground in passes to below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Tell us first if you are planting or laying turf and it goes deeper.

Clean ground

Grindings are raked back into the hole and topped, left in a pile for your beds, or hauled off. Any marks on the lawn get raked.
