Union Mills has a post office and its own fire department but no town hall. It is an unincorporated community in northern Rutherford County, strung along Hudlow Road east of US 221, north of Rutherfordton, at a little over a thousand feet. This is old gold country. From 1790 until the California gold rush, Rutherford County was the most important gold-producing region in America, and the Thermal City Gold Mine, a recreational gold and gem mining site on US 221 North, still carries a Union Mills address.

Where can a stump from Union Mills go if I dig it out myself?
