Forestry Mulching in Hendersonville

Mulching on the edges of a mountain city

At about 2,100 feet, Hendersonville averages close to sixty inches of rain a year, falling on roughly a third of the days. Ground that is not mowed or built on here does not stay bare for long. Saplings, vines and briars take a wooded lot or the back of a big yard within a few seasons. Forestry mulching is one way to open that ground without scraping it: a mulching head grinds the growth standing and leaves a layer of chip spread over the soil, which is worth having when the next heavy rain arrives.

Around Hendersonville the jobs are mostly the in-between ground: a wooded lot nobody built on, the back half of a large yard, a slope behind a subdivision, or woods left tangled after Helene in September 2024. Mulching suits them when the goal is land you can use, walk or mow. If the plan is a house, a driveway or a drain field, the roots have to come out, and that becomes land clearing in Hendersonville instead.

JB Stump Grinding & Land Management is based in Tryon, down I-26 in Polk County, and Hendersonville, the Henderson County seat, is inside the normal working area. Quotes come from photos and a description of what the land is for. Include a picture of the densest growth with a tape or boot beside it, one wide view and the way in from the street, and say which trees stay. What forestry mulching leaves on the ground is set out on the service page.

Bittersweet and Callery pear at the wood edges

Two invasive plants are worth knowing before mulching around Hendersonville. Oriental bittersweet is a fast vine that NC State Extension lists as invasive and a noxious weed, spread by birds, and it warns that cutting the vine alone makes it resprout many times over. Callery pear is the other. The Hendersonville Tree Board has run a Bradford Pear Bounty with NC State, giving a free native tree for each pear removed, up to five, with registration and a photo required. Watch for the next one; the bounty guide explains how they work.

Henderson County reviews land disturbance in the city

Henderson County runs its own soil erosion and sedimentation control program, and it covers the City of Hendersonville along with Laurel Park, Fletcher and Flat Rock. The county's Site Development staff review plans, inspect active sites and look into complaints. Mulching that leaves roots and soil in place is about as light as land work gets, but on a big or steep piece, ask the program whether your job needs anything from them before it starts. Projects inside Mills River are the exception and go to N.C. DEQ.

City brush pickup and contractor debris

The city picks up brush every other week on garbage day, up to two cubic yards stacked in a single pile, and it will not take stumps, root balls or logs longer than eight feet. It is also clear on one point: when you hire a contractor, the contractor removes the debris the job makes. Mulching sidesteps that, because the material never leaves the ground. If part of the job does produce logs or stumps that must go, plan for them to leave on a trailer and say so when you ask for a price.

Does mulching kill oriental bittersweet around my Hendersonville yard?

No. NC State Extension notes that cutting the vine alone makes it resprout many times over, and mulching is a form of cutting. What mulching does is pull the tangles down so the stems are reachable. From there, the extension advice for home landscapes is to cut the vine and treat the cut stem with herbicide right away, following the label.

Do I need approval from Henderson County to mulch land in Hendersonville?

Henderson County's erosion control program covers the city, so it is the office to ask. Whether a mulching job needs anything depends on what it disturbs and how much ground is involved. Light work that leaves roots and soil in place is very different from grading, but the county decides, so ask before a large or steep job.

Will the City of Hendersonville pick up brush from a mulching or clearing job?

No. The city's yard waste rules make a contractor responsible for removing the debris it generates. With mulching that is mostly moot, since the brush stays on site as chip. Logs or stumps that have to leave go out on a trailer, and that is priced into the job.

How wet is too wet to mulch in Hendersonville?

If the ground squelches underfoot or a boot print fills with water, wait. Hendersonville averages close to sixty inches of rain a year, so dry spells are worth using. Low ground near Mud Creek and other streams is the last to firm up. Photos of the wettest spot help Jordan suggest a sensible date.
