Stump grinding in Reidville

Grinding and Removing Stumps in Reidville, SC

Reidville has had a post office since 1858 and takes its name from R. H. Reid, a local minister, and the Reidville Academy Faculty House is on the National Register. For most of its history the town stayed small: 242 people in 1960, 601 in 2010. Then it grew quickly, to 1,634 at the 2020 census. The town lies between the SC-290 and SC-101 corridors, with Reidville Road running through it. Growth like that means new streets, new houses and new yards, and new yards come with their own kind of stump.

Reidville is well within reach of JB Stump Grinding & Land Management in Tryon, North Carolina. One sizable stump earns a visit, and a row of dead screen trees along a back fence is just the sort of job a single trip clears. Jordan works the price out himself from pictures: each stump with a ruler or a shoe for size, the side gate, and how many there are in total. The main stump grinding page covers how the grinder works.

Leyland cypress screens that died back

Clemson Extension calls Leyland cypress an excellent choice for quick screens, and says it grows three to four feet a year when young and reaches sixty to seventy feet tall. It also says the most serious problem is a canker that causes branch dieback to the main trunk. A row planted close for privacy can turn brown a section at a time. Once the trees are cut, the stumps are small to medium and close together, and the grinder works straight down the line. See Leyland cypress stump removal.

Town boards and the 2023 zoning ordinance

Reidville is an incorporated town with its own Planning and Zoning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals and Architectural Review Board, and it adopted a zoning ordinance in September 2023. Before stump work near the street, or as part of building or clearing a lot, ask the town office what applies, and check your HOA covenants as well. If a footing, slab or pool is planned on top of the stump, chips in a hole will not do. The root ball has to come out whole: full stump removal explains how.

New sod over graded clay

A new yard is graded before the sod goes down, and in this part of Spartanburg County what lies under the grass is usually red clay. Clay holds rain, so the tracked grinder waits for firm ground rather than rutting a lawn that took a season to establish. New Reidville yards also tend to have sprinkler pipe. The 811 locate covers public utilities only, so sprinkler lines, landscape lighting wire and the boundary wire for a pet fence need flagging by you. When fresh sod is going on top, tell Jordan and the stump is taken deeper than usual.

Does the Town of Reidville have rules about taking out trees or stumps?

Ask the town office before you book. Reidville adopted a zoning ordinance in 2023 and has a Planning and Zoning Commission and an Architectural Review Board, so the answer may turn on the stump's location and how the lot is used. Your HOA may have covenants of its own. Once you know, two pictures are enough for a quote.

Can you grind a whole row of dead Leyland cypress stumps along a Reidville fence?

Yes, and a row is one visit. Give the count, put a tape across the thickest stump, and shoot one picture along the fence and one of the gate. If the fence is close to the row, say so: the cutting wheel can work near a post, but it helps to plan the side the machine approaches from.

Our Reidville lot still has stumps where the house pad and driveway will go. What do we need?

Anywhere concrete or a footing is going, the stump comes out whole, root ball included, and the hole is refilled and left to settle before anything is poured. The loader or the excavator does that part. Elsewhere on the lot, grinding below grade is enough. Send a plat or photos with the building area marked, and the whole lot is quoted together.

How it works

How a Job Runs

Send two photos

One of the stump with something for scale, one of the way in, plus your town. Call, use the form, or email the photos.

Get your quote

Jordan quotes every job himself. Estimates are free, and you have the number before any work starts.

Lines get marked

Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them. 811 does not mark private lines, so point out irrigation, lighting, invisible fence and septic parts.

The grind

The stump is ground in passes to below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Tell us first if you are planting or laying turf and it goes deeper.

Clean ground

Grindings are raked back into the hole and topped, left in a pile for your beds, or hauled off. Any marks on the lawn get raked.
