Stump grinding in Pacolet

Grinding and Removing Stumps in Pacolet, SC

On June 6, 1903, a storm in the mountains north of Spartanburg sent the Pacolet River over its banks, and the water swept away two of Pacolet's mills and badly damaged a third. Most of the mill houses standing today went up between 1915 and 1920, and the Pacolet Mills Historic District now counts 126 contributing buildings. In 1997 Pacolet Station and Pacolet Mills merged into one town, which sits beside Central Pacolet. Stumps here are on two kinds of ground: village lots, and the bottomland by the river.

Pacolet lies on US-176, the same highway that passes through Tryon, North Carolina, home base for JB Stump Grinding & Land Management, and it falls inside the usual area. One sound stump of reasonable size pays for the run, and a few at once lower the cost of each. For a price, Jordan wants one picture of the stump with a yardstick or a boot against it and one of the path from the street. Everything about the method is on the stump grinding page.

Bungalows in the mill village

The Pacolet mill village was laid out in 1919, and the historic district, bounded by streets such as Brewster, Millikin, Montgomery and Moore, is mostly Craftsman bungalows with some Tudor Revival houses. A stump in one of those yards is usually near a porch, a walk or a set of front steps. The grinder runs on narrow tracks and cuts the stump away where it stands, so it can work close to a foundation without pulling on roots that run under it. Take the picture from far enough back to include the steps or wall beside the stump. See tight-access stump grinding.

River birch on the soft ground

Bottomland along the river holds water after a storm, and trees that like wet feet grow there. NC State Extension says river birch is found naturally on riverbanks, streambanks and floodplains, can tolerate flooding for long periods, grows fast and drops a lot of twigs. A birch stump is not hard to grind; the ground around it is the issue. Soaked soil ruts under any machine, so a riverside stump in Pacolet waits for a dry spell. On a bank, grinding leaves the roots in place to hold the soil. See stumps in ditches and creek banks.

Cecil red clay on the higher ground

The soils around Pacolet are mainly Cecil, with Bethlehem soil near the river. Cecil is the common Piedmont soil of this part of Spartanburg County: brown sandy loam on top and red clay beneath, and where the topsoil has washed off, the red clay is right at the surface. That clay holds rain and stays slick, so grinding on a lawn waits until it has dried and firmed up. The chips go back into the hole with soil over them, or leave on the trailer and the hole is filled with soil at a separate price. More in our guide to stump grinding in red clay.

Can you grind a stump on the Pacolet River bank behind my house?

Often, yes, once the bank has dried out enough to hold the machine without sinking. Grinding leaves the roots in the bank, which helps keep the soil where it is. Work at the water's edge can bring in stream and erosion rules, so ask Spartanburg County first. Then send pictures from above and below the stump showing the slope.

Is Pacolet inside your normal area, or too far east?

Inside it. Jordan is based in Tryon, and US-176 runs from there down through Spartanburg County to Pacolet. A single stump of fair size is worth the drive. If you have several, or a neighbor on your street does, put them in one visit, because each extra stump costs less than the first.

Do you cover Central Pacolet as well as the town of Pacolet?

Yes. Central Pacolet is a separate town, but it sits right beside Pacolet, and the two are one trip for a stump grinder. If you and someone in the other town both have stumps, say so when you call so the visits can be combined. Pictures of each stump and the route to it are enough for a quote.

How it works

How a Job Runs

Send two photos

One of the stump with something for scale, one of the way in, plus your town. Call, use the form, or email the photos.

Get your quote

Jordan quotes every job himself. Estimates are free, and you have the number before any work starts.

Lines get marked

Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them. 811 does not mark private lines, so point out irrigation, lighting, invisible fence and septic parts.

The grind

The stump is ground in passes to below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Tell us first if you are planting or laying turf and it goes deeper.

Clean ground

Grindings are raked back into the hole and topped, left in a pile for your beds, or hauled off. Any marks on the lawn get raked.
