Stump Grinding in Berea, SC
Stump grinding and stump removal in Berea, between the Saluda River and the city of Greenville. Roadside stumps, storm-broken pines and overgrown lots, quoted from two photos and worth booking as more than one stump.
Grinding and Removing Stumps in Berea, SC
SC 183, Farrs Bridge Road, crosses the Saluda River and runs into US 25, White Horse Road, at Berea, then carries on southeast into downtown Greenville. Nobody elects a Berea mayor. It is an unincorporated, census-designated place of 15,578 people at the 2020 count, served by Greenville County offices and a branch of the county library. At about 1,060 feet it also sits higher than Five Forks or Fountain Inn, which are both under 900.
Seen from Jordan's yard in Tryon, North Carolina, Berea is out at the edge of the area. That makes it a good fit for several stumps on one property, a big or awkward one, or stump work that goes on into clearing a lot. One small stump on its own makes more sense booked when there is other work on that side of Greenville. Send a photo and ask. The stump grinding page shows what a visit involves.
Stumps along White Horse Road and SC 183
Two numbered highways run through Berea, and frontage on a state road is a different matter from a back yard. Greenville County's answer book says the state highway department trims and removes trees within its right-of-way, and county Public Works does the same along county roads. So a stump at the front of a lot on White Horse Road or Farrs Bridge Road may not be yours to grind. Ask before paying anyone. On your side of the line, 811 handles the public utility lines before any grinding near them; irrigation, lighting cable or a buried dog fence is yours to point out.
Pines that snapped or tipped
A pine that breaks in wind leaves a tall, jagged stump. One that tips over drags its roots up with it, a disc of soil and roots stood on end over a crater. Those are two different jobs. A broken stump is ground like any other, measured across at ground level, and its height matters far less than its width. That disc needs the loader or the excavator to lift it clear, then the crater is filled back in. Tell Jordan which one you have in Berea. Storm stump and root ball removal explains that second job in detail.
When a stump job becomes a cleared lot
Grinding one stump where it stands is not land clearing. Clearing a whole lot can be, and Greenville County treats it that way. Its Land Development Division says a residential lot where an acre or more of ground is disturbed needs a Land Disturbance permit. Below that, the rules hinge on whether a building permit is involved. If you are opening up an overgrown lot in Berea, ask Land Development what applies before work starts. Land clearing and lot clearing explains the work itself.

Berea Stump Questions
The big questions each have a full guide. Shorter answers are on the FAQ page.
The stump is between my Berea yard and White Horse Road. Whose is it?
It may belong to the road. White Horse Road is US 25, a state highway, and Greenville County says the state highway department handles trees in its right-of-way. County Public Works does the same on county roads. Ask the right office where your line runs before anyone grinds it. If it turns out to be on your side, send two photos and it can be quoted.
Is there a Greenville County permit for clearing stumps off a lot in Berea?
It depends on the size of the job. Greenville County draws its main line at one acre: a residential lot with an acre or more of disturbed ground needs a Land Disturbance permit from Land Development, and smaller lots can still be covered when a building permit is in play. Grinding a stump in place is a much smaller thing than clearing a lot, but the answer is the county's to give, so ask them first.
A pine broke off halfway up in a Berea storm. Can the tall stump be ground?
Yes. A tall stump is brought down in passes like a short one, and the height adds less time than people expect. What matters is the width across the base at ground level. Send a photo with something for scale. If the tree tipped and lifted its roots instead of snapping, that is root plate work for the loader or excavator.

How a Job Runs
Send two photos
One of the stump with something for scale, one of the way in, plus your town. Call, use the form, or email the photos.
Get your quote
Jordan quotes every job himself. Estimates are free, and you have the number before any work starts.
Lines get marked
Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them. 811 does not mark private lines, so point out irrigation, lighting, invisible fence and septic parts.
The grind
The stump is ground in passes to below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Tell us first if you are planting or laying turf and it goes deeper.
Clean ground
Grindings are raked back into the hole and topped, left in a pile for your beds, or hauled off. Any marks on the lawn get raked.
