Stump grinding in Dana

Grinding and Removing Stumps in Dana, NC

Dana got its post office in 1892, opened to serve the Hadley Hotel and named for the owner's son, Dana Hadley. The North Carolina Gazetteer adds one more line about the place: it is known for growing and packing apples. That fits the county. Apples have been Henderson County's most important crop since the Second World War, and the community east of Hendersonville is part of that farm ground, with the Hungry River draining its east side and Mud Creek its west.

Orchards make a particular kind of stump job. The stumps are often small, but there are a lot of them, lined up in rows. When an old block of trees comes out, every one of those stumps is in the way of a mower, a new planting or a house. Dana sits within our regular range, and the tracked Carlton grinder takes each stump below grade, one after another. Read the stump grinding page for depth and clean-up.

Rows of small stumps

NC State Extension notes that many apple trees are grafted onto dwarfing rootstocks that keep them small. A dwarf or semi-dwarf Gala or Fuji, for example, stays somewhere between eight and fifteen feet tall. So an orchard stump in Dana is rarely wide. The work is in the count. The grinder moves down a row from one stump to the next, and the setup is paid once across all of them. Read grinding several stumps at once for how a big batch is planned and priced.

Turning orchard ground into pasture or lawn

Once the trees are gone, the old rows still show: a line of stumps, maybe a line of posts and wire that held the trees up, and ground that has not been worked in years. Grinding every stump below grade lets a mower or a tractor run across the rows. If brush and saplings have moved in between them, clearing can go into the same visit. Mention any old trellis wire or posts, because the cutting wheel needs to stay clear of metal.

Farm lanes, sheds and frontage

Around packing sheds, barns and farm lanes, stumps turn up at the edges of gravel, beside a building or along the road. Those can be ground in the same visit as the orchard rows. If the work is on business property, our commercial stump grinding page explains how a site is planned around people using it. 811 handles the utility-owned lines before any grinding close to them. Old orchard irrigation is private and will not be marked, so show us where it runs.

We are taking out an old apple orchard in Dana. Can all the stumps in the rows be done in one visit?

Usually, yes. Small orchard stumps grind quickly once the machine is beside them, so a long row is mostly a matter of moving from one to the next. Send a photo down a row, a close-up of one stump with something for scale, and a rough count. That is enough for Jordan to price the whole block without a visit.

We want to plant new trees where the old ones stood in Dana. Is grinding enough?

Tell Jordan before the work, because it changes the job. A new tree in the exact same spot needs the stump ground deeper, or lifted out whole, so the new roots are not sitting on old wood. Setting the new rows between the old ones avoids the problem. Our guide to replanting a tree in the same spot covers it.

We are building a house on old farm ground in Dana. Which stumps have to come out whole?

The ones under the footprint, the driveway and anything else being dug or built: those root balls are lifted out and the holes backfilled. Stumps in what will be lawn can simply be ground. If a septic system is part of the plan, Henderson County Environmental Health handles the permit, so check with them early. The rest of the lot can be ground.

How it works

How a Job Runs

Send two photos

One of the stump with something for scale, one of the way in, plus your town. Call, use the form, or email the photos.

Get your quote

Jordan quotes every job himself. Estimates are free, and you have the number before any work starts.

Lines get marked

Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them. 811 does not mark private lines, so point out irrigation, lighting, invisible fence and septic parts.

The grind

The stump is ground in passes to below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Tell us first if you are planting or laying turf and it goes deeper.

Clean ground

Grindings are raked back into the hole and topped, left in a pile for your beds, or hauled off. Any marks on the lawn get raked.
