Stump grinding in Fairview

Grinding and Removing Stumps in Fairview, NC

Martin Gash bought seventy-six acres on Cripple Creek in 1793, and the valley he settled became Fairview. Early farmers drained marshes and channeled creeks to make crop land, and that work still shapes the place: flat, fertile valley floors with steep wooded walls on either side. US 74A, the Charlotte Highway, runs through it. Sherrill's Inn, built about 1845 just south of Fairview off the same road, served travelers through much of the 1800s and is now on the National Register.

Straight talk on distance: Fairview, out in Buncombe County, sits on the outer ring of our map, and the yard is in Tryon. A Fairview visit works when it lines up with other jobs on this side of the mountains, and a group of stumps justifies the drive far more easily than a single one. Big stumps, storm-tipped trees with their root plates up, and hillside stumps a wheeled machine cannot reach are where the trip earns its keep. For how the grinding itself is done, read stump grinding and stump removal.

Valley floors that were once marsh

Ground that was drained to make farm land can still hold water, and the bottoms in Fairview are where a yard stays soft longest after rain. The tracked grinder spreads its weight, but a soaked lawn still marks, so a stretch of dry weather makes for a cleaner job. Old farm valleys also mean old fence rows and field-edge stumps. Those grind below grade like any other, and a row of them done in one visit is the kind of job that suits this distance.

Cove slopes and tulip poplar

NC State Extension describes tulip poplar as a tree of cove forests above 1,500 feet that grows fast, has weak wood that breaks in wind, ice and snow, and keeps a shallow root system. On the slopes above Fairview that means a tall, fast tree with brittle wood and shallow roots, the kind a storm brings down. How a machine reaches a stump on a grade is set out under steep-slope stump grinding, and tulip poplar stump removal covers the species.

Along the Charlotte Highway

Plenty of Buncombe County homes around Fairview sit up a hollow, at the end of a drive off US 74A or a side road. The truck and trailer park where there is room and the grinder tracks in from there. If a stump is near the highway, find out whether it sits on your land or in the state right-of-way, which is the NCDOT district office's call. Where buried services run near a stump, the utility-owned ones are found through 811 first, and private ones such as a well line or septic run need showing to us. Tree still standing? Send a photo.

Fairview is a long way from Tryon. Is it worth asking you about stumps there?

Yes, if there is enough work to justify the drive. A batch of stumps, one very large one, a storm-damaged tree with its root plate up, or stump work that runs into clearing or grading are all worth a call. For a single small stump, send the photos anyway and Jordan will tell you straight whether it makes sense.

The bottom of our Fairview land never fully dries out. Can a stump down there still be ground?

Usually, with the right timing. The tracked machine copes with soft ground far better than a wheeled one, but saturated soil still marks and can rut. A dry spell is the time to do it. Send photos of the stump and the ground around it, and say how wet it gets, and the date will be set around the weather.

A tulip poplar came down on our Fairview hillside and lifted its roots. What happens now?

The root plate can be ground flat or lifted out whole with the loader or the excavator, depending on the slope and what you want there next. If it is lifted, the hole is backfilled. Our page on storm stump and root ball removal explains both routes. Send photos showing the root plate, the trunk and the way in.

How it works

How a Job Runs

Send two photos

One of the stump with something for scale, one of the way in, plus your town. Call, use the form, or email the photos.

Get your quote

Jordan quotes every job himself. Estimates are free, and you have the number before any work starts.

Lines get marked

Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them. 811 does not mark private lines, so point out irrigation, lighting, invisible fence and septic parts.

The grind

The stump is ground in passes to below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Tell us first if you are planting or laying turf and it goes deeper.

Clean ground

Grindings are raked back into the hole and topped, left in a pile for your beds, or hauled off. Any marks on the lawn get raked.
