Stump grinding in Skyland

Grinding and Removing Stumps in Skyland, NC

Hendersonville Road carries US 25 through Skyland, and Long Shoals Road starts there and runs west past Lake Julian, over I-26 and across the French Broad River. Just north, the Blue Ridge Parkway passes over US 25 on its way toward Biltmore Forest. To the south is Royal Pines, with Brown Mountain in the middle of it. So Skyland is a busy road corridor with neighborhoods rising and falling off both sides, and a stump here usually sits on a suburban lot, close to a drive, a walk or a neighbor's fence.

Skyland is in Buncombe County, at the top end of what we cover from Tryon, and it is fair to say so up front. A visit this far north gets planned around other jobs nearby, and it pays off with a handful of stumps more than with a single one. A wide hardwood, several stumps left after a storm, or stump work that leads straight into grading are the jobs where the drive is worth it. The grinder runs on tracks. What happens on the day is set out on our stump grinding page.

City or county: find out which one you are in

Skyland has no town government of its own, and the Asheville city limits reach into it. The corner where Long Shoals Road meets Hendersonville Road, for one, is inside the city. That matters before anything is dug. If your lot is in the city, questions about street trees, steep ground or grading go to the City of Asheville. If it is not, they go to Buncombe County. A ground-out stump leaves the soil around it where it was, and a pulled root ball does not, so say which one you have in mind when you ask.

Red maple flares under the drive

NC State Extension describes red maple as a tree that makes a dense mat of surface roots, shallow enough to buckle a sidewalk or a driveway when it is planted too close. If a maple stood beside your drive in Skyland, the stump will have a wide flare running toward the concrete. Grinding takes the stump and the flare below grade from the side, without levering the slab up. Roots further out stay in the ground and rot. Our guide to grinding beside a driveway or sidewalk covers the edge of the paving.

Making the trip count

Count every stump on the lot before you call, and ask the people next door. Skyland streets are close enough that two or three yards can share one visit, with the machine unloaded once and the setup done once. Measure the widest stump across the cut face, photograph the way in from the street, and say whether the grindings should be raked in or taken away. Tree still up? Send that photo as well and we can talk about what comes first. Fletcher, down US 25, is inside our normal area.

Is Skyland inside the Asheville city limits for tree and stump questions?

Partly. Skyland is an unincorporated community, but the Asheville city limits reach into it, including the corner of Long Shoals Road and Hendersonville Road. Check your address with the City of Asheville or Buncombe County before any work that disturbs the ground. Once you know which office applies, two photos are usually enough for Jordan to quote the stump.

Will you drive to Skyland for one small stump?

Ask. Skyland is a long way up the road from Tryon, so one small stump fits in most easily when there is other work close by, and Jordan will tell you straight how and when that could happen. Two or more stumps, a wide one, or a neighbor with stumps of their own make the visit much simpler to plan.

Can a red maple stump against my driveway in Skyland be ground without cracking the concrete?

Usually. The grinder cuts the wood away where it stands and takes it below grade. It does not pull on the roots, so the slab is not levered up from underneath. Where the flare runs under the concrete, the wheel works to the edge of it. Mats keep the machine's tracks off the drive. Send a photo showing the stump and the paving together.

How it works

How a Job Runs

Send two photos

One of the stump with something for scale, one of the way in, plus your town. Call, use the form, or email the photos.

Get your quote

Jordan quotes every job himself. Estimates are free, and you have the number before any work starts.

Lines get marked

Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them. 811 does not mark private lines, so point out irrigation, lighting, invisible fence and septic parts.

The grind

The stump is ground in passes to below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Tell us first if you are planting or laying turf and it goes deeper.

Clean ground

Grindings are raked back into the hole and topped, left in a pile for your beds, or hauled off. Any marks on the lawn get raked.
