Stump grinding in Cowpens

Grinding and Removing Stumps in Cowpens, SC

Hannah's Cow-pens was grazing ground that frontier farmers used, and it gave its name to the 1781 battle and later to this town. The battlefield is preserved north of town in Cherokee County, near Chesnee. Cowpens itself was chartered in 1880 and incorporated in 1900, and it is small, a little over two square miles, set along US-29. Its 1896 depot was moved one block by the town in 1982 and is now a museum and civic center. So there are two kinds of stump job here: a yard in town, and country ground on the roads out.

Cowpens is part of the regular Spartanburg County ground for JB Stump Grinding & Land Management, which comes down from Tryon, North Carolina. A decent single stump is a job on its own. A fence row, or several yards on one street, spreads the trip so each stump costs less. Jordan sets the price himself once he has seen the stump beside a boot or tape, the route the tracks would take, and your address. Start with the main stump grinding page.

What the town picks up, and what it does not

The Town of Cowpens collects yard waste made up of small limbs and leaves as needed, and asks for leaves and limbs in separate piles because different machinery picks up each. Bigger items wait for the spring and fall cleanups or go to the county landfill, and the county collection center on Ellis Road does not take lumber or other large items. A stump is not small limbs, so check with Town Hall or the landfill before hauling one yourself. Ground in place, it becomes chips that never leave your lot. More in our Spartanburg County yard debris guide.

Old cedar stumps that will not rot

If the stump in your Cowpens pasture or fence row is an eastern red cedar, expect it to be sound. NC State Extension notes that cedar's heartwood has a strong scent and resists rot on its own, the reason the wood ends up as fence posts and rails. The same wood is slow to break down in the ground, so an old cedar stump can stay hard long after the tree was cut, and waiting for it to rot is a long wait. It grinds like any other stump. See red cedar stump removal.

Battleground Road and the town line

SC-110 is called Battleground Road along its whole length, running from North Main Street in town out to the battlefield. Inside the town limits, a stump by the street is a question for Cowpens Town Hall. Outside, it is Spartanburg County, and US-29 and SC-110 are state roads with their own right-of-way. Out on country lots the way in is more often a field gate or a lane than a yard gate, so send a picture of it and of anything the machine has to cross, such as a ditch or a culvert.

Will the Town of Cowpens take a stump with the yard waste?

Ask Town Hall, but do not count on it. The town's public services page describes yard waste as small limbs and leaves, kept in separate piles, and sends larger items to the spring and fall cleanups or the county landfill. A ground stump avoids the question, because the chips stay put, filling the hole or heaped for your beds.

Can an old cedar stump in a fence row near Cowpens still be ground?

Yes. Cedar heartwood resists rot, so an old cedar stump is usually still hard, but the cutting wheel takes it down in passes like any other wood. Mention any wire that has grown into it, and if there are several, include a shot looking along the fence. A row of them is one visit.

Do you grind stumps out along Battleground Road as well as in the town of Cowpens?

Yes. The town and the country around it, out along Battleground Road and toward Pacolet and Chesnee, are inside the normal working area. Country lots often mean a longer walk in for the machine, so photograph the gate or lane and say roughly how far the stump sits from the spot where the trailer can stop.

How it works

How a Job Runs

Send two photos

One of the stump with something for scale, one of the way in, plus your town. Call, use the form, or email the photos.

Get your quote

Jordan quotes every job himself. Estimates are free, and you have the number before any work starts.

Lines get marked

Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them. 811 does not mark private lines, so point out irrigation, lighting, invisible fence and septic parts.

The grind

The stump is ground in passes to below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Tell us first if you are planting or laying turf and it goes deeper.

Clean ground

Grindings are raked back into the hole and topped, left in a pile for your beds, or hauled off. Any marks on the lawn get raked.
