Forestry Mulching in Inman, SC
Overgrown fields, old orchard ground and brushy woods around Inman ground in place and left under a chip layer. Inman is inside the normal working area, and photos are enough to get a number.
From peach rows to brush
Inman billed itself in the 1930s as the world's fresh peach capital, and plenty of the land around town was orchard. An orchard that stops being worked does not stay open. The rows fill with briars and saplings, and within a few years the ground is a thicket with the old fruit trees buried somewhere inside. Forestry mulching suits that kind of land. A mulching head grinds the brush and young trees where they stand and spreads the chip, opening the ground again without piles to burn or haul.
The soil under most of it is Upstate red clay, and the clay sets the timing. Dry, firm clay carries a machine with little mark. The same field after a wet week ruts and smears, and ruts in clay are slow to heal. The ground decides the date, not the calendar. Chip on top also holds moisture in the soil, which is good for trees you keep, so if you plan to seed grass, ask for the chip to be spread thin rather than left in a mat.
Inman, in northern Spartanburg County, sits in the normal working area, south down US-176 from Tryon, North Carolina, where the business is based. A few acres of brush or a long overgrown edge is a sensible job to send in. Jordan quotes from photos and a short description of what the land is for, and he will tell you if clearing with the roots out fits the plan better than mulching.

Lake Bowen: the shore strip is not yours to mulch
Lake Bowen is close to Inman, and the strip of ground right along its shore belongs to Spartanburg Water, not to the lot owners. Changing the natural vegetation in that buffer takes a permit from the utility unless the work is specifically exempt, and its page sends questions to the Lake Bowen Wardens' Office. So on a lake lot, mulching stops at your property line until the permit question is settled. Above the buffer, a band of undergrowth left uphill of the water still keeps clay out of the lake. The waterfront lots guide has more.
Mill village lots and the edge of town
Inman Mills opened in 1901, and the original mill closed in 2001 and became apartments. The streets of houses around it are close-set, with small yards. Mulching is rarely the tool there; small lots call for hand work, a brush cutter or stump grinding. It comes into play at the edge of town and beyond, where the back acreage behind a house, an old pasture or a woods lot has closed in. Say how close the nearest houses, cars and fences are, because a mulching head throws chips and small stones.
Who to ask before a bigger job
Burning outside town limits means notifying the S.C. Forestry Commission first; mulching makes that step unnecessary. Land disturbance is the other question. Some clearing in South Carolina needs a stormwater permit, and whether yours does depends on the size of the job and on who reviews work at your address, Spartanburg County or the City of Inman. Ask before working several acres, near a stream or on a slope, and keep sediment off roads and out of ditches whatever the answer is.

Can I mulch the brush between my Inman lake house and Lake Bowen?
Only as far as your own line without asking. The utility, Spartanburg Water, owns the ground along Lake Bowen's shore, and altering the plants growing in that buffer needs its permit unless the work is exempt. Call the Lake Bowen Wardens' Office first. Above the buffer, mulching comes down to slope, access and what you want to keep.
When is Inman red clay firm enough for mulching?
When it is dry enough that a boot heel barely marks it. After a wet spell the same ground ruts, and ruts in clay are slow to heal. Waiting a week costs less than repairing a field. Jordan will say if the weather calls for a later date, and low ground near streams is usually the last to firm up.
Can an old peach orchard near Inman be mulched?
Usually, yes. The brush and saplings grown up between the rows can be mulched where they stand, leaving the land open for mowing or grazing. Old fruit trees with thick trunks may need cutting first, and any stumps a mower will hit can be ground below grade afterward. Send photos down a row and of the thickest trunks.
How do I get a forestry mulching quote in Inman?
Photograph the densest patch with a tape or a boot in the frame, take one wide view of the area and one of the way in from the road, and give a rough acreage. Add your town and what the land is for, and flag trees you want kept. Stumps in the yard can go on the same quote; see stump grinding in Inman.
