Land Clearing in Mill Spring, NC
Grown-over pasture, fence rows and wooded acreage around Mill Spring cleared back to ground that can be fenced, mowed or built on. Close to home from Tryon, and quoted from photos of the land and the way in.
Pasture country at the crossroads
Horse country sets the pattern for clearing around Mill Spring. The community grew up where NC 9 meets NC 108, and the land round it is pasture, paddock, hay ground and wooded draws between them. Leave a field alone and saplings and briars march in from the edges until the fence is inside a hedge. Clearing it means pulling that growth back to the line, getting the roots out of ground that will be mowed, and leaving a clean run for new wire.
Not every acre needs the same treatment. A house site or a barn pad needs its stumps lifted out whole, because buried wood rots and the ground drops. A paddock needs stumps ground well below where a hoof or a mower blade can find them. Woods you are keeping may only need the understory opened. Mark which is which on a sketch and the quote follows it. Pasture and fence line stump grinding covers the field side.
Mill Spring shares a county with the yard in Tryon, which puts it close to home. The Tryon International Equestrian Center is on the community's doorstep, and when Helene came through in September 2024 it served as a command center and assembly point. If storm wreckage is still lying in a woodlot or along a fence, clearing it now is easier than after another season of vines.

Lake Adger and the stream setbacks
Lake Adger lies northwest of Mill Spring, and Polk County's watershed ordinance names the Green River at Lake Adger as a water supply watershed, along with the Broad River basins to the east. In those areas the ordinance caps how much of a project can be built over and requires a vegetated setback along perennial streams: at least 30 feet, and 100 feet for denser projects. Before clearing near a creek or the lake, ask Polk County Planning and Zoning whether your parcel falls inside one.
Burning brush on Mill Spring acreage
Out here a burn pile is sometimes practical where it never would be in town. North Carolina lets land-clearing debris be burned, stumps included, when the pile is at least 500 feet from occupied structures, between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., on a code green or yellow air quality day. A free NC Forest Service permit is needed near woodland, and clearing burns over five acres need a special permit. Kerosene or diesel can start it. Nothing man-made goes on the pile.
The transfer station up NC 9
When burning is not the answer, Polk County's landfill is close by, up NC 9 above the crossroads, and stumps, brush and yard waste are all on its accepted list. Phone first and ask how root balls should be delivered and whether a contractor's load is treated differently. On a big farm job, logs worth keeping can be stacked for firewood or a sawyer and the rest goes on the trailer. Reclaiming an overgrown pasture covers the work that follows.

Can I burn brush from clearing land in Mill Spring NC?
Often, on acreage that can meet the state rules. Keep the pile 500 feet from any occupied building, burn only natural vegetation from the site, and only in daytime hours on a good air quality day. Get the free NC Forest Service permit first and check for a burn ban on the morning you light it.
Does land near Lake Adger have special clearing rules?
It can. Polk County's watershed ordinance covers the Green River at Lake Adger, with limits on built-upon area and a vegetated setback along perennial streams. Ask Polk County Planning and Zoning before clearing near the water, and get the answer in writing so the work can be planned around it.
How is a fence row in Mill Spring cleared without wrecking the fence?
Slowly at the wire. Brush and saplings come off both sides, the grapple pulls what has rooted along the line, and you decide what happens to the old wire. Say how much of the fence you want to keep before the quote, and mark any posts or gates that matter.
Can land be cleared for a horse barn or arena in Mill Spring?
Yes. A barn, arena or run-in shed site is cleared to soil with the roots out, because anything heavy built over buried wood settles. The same machines can then shape the pad. Send photos and a rough sketch of where it goes, and see land clearing for how the work runs.
