Stump grinding in Horse Shoe

Grinding and Removing Stumps in Horse Shoe, NC

Horse Shoe is named for a sharp bend in the French Broad River, and the river runs right through the middle of the community. US 64 crosses it on the south side of the water, Mills River lies to the north and Etowah is next door to the west. Horse Shoe Mountain, which tops out at 2,775 feet according to the state gazetteer, stands between Johnsons Mill Creek and the river. So the land here comes in two kinds: river bottom and hillside.

That gives stump grinding in Horse Shoe two different problems. On the low ground by the river the issue is soft soil that stays wet after rain. On the slopes it is getting a machine to the stump at all. Both are inside our normal working area, which takes in all of Henderson County. The grinder is a Carlton on tracks, which spreads its weight on soft ground and holds a slope far better than wheels do. The method is on the stump grinding page.

River birch and sycamore on the low ground

NC State Extension describes river birch as a tree of riverbanks, streambanks and floodplains that copes with flooding, and it often grows with two or three trunks from one base. That makes one wide stump with several cut faces. Sycamore likes the same wet ground and gets far bigger: the Extension gives it a height of 75 to 100 feet and a trunk that can pass ten feet across. Measure across the whole base at ground level and send the number, because width is what sets the work.

Stumps on the riverbank

A stump on a river or creek bank is holding soil. Grinding takes it below grade but leaves the roots in the ground, where they go on holding some soil while they slowly rot. Pulling a root ball out of a bank opens a hole for the next high water to work at. On a bank, grinding is usually the gentler choice. If you want a bank stump lifted out whole in Horse Shoe, ask Henderson County first, because floodplain rules can apply to digging near the river. See stumps in ditches and creek banks.

Hillside lots above the river

Away from the bottom land, Horse Shoe houses climb the slopes, and a stump can sit on a grade where a wheeled machine would slide. The truck and trailer park where they can, and the grinder walks the rest of the way on its own. On a steep bank the chips belong packed into the hole or on the trailer, not spread where a storm will sluice them downhill. Our page on stump grinding on steep slopes explains how that is planned. Before grinding, the 811 service marks lines the utilities own. Irrigation or a septic run is private, so point those out.

Our Horse Shoe yard runs down to the French Broad and stays soft. When should the stump be ground?

After a dry spell. Tracks spread the machine's weight, but saturated river-bottom ground still marks. Grinding works in any season, so the date depends on the ground rather than the month. Send photos and say how wet the spot usually gets, and you will get a straight answer about timing before anything is booked.

Can a river birch with three trunks in Horse Shoe be ground as one stump?

Usually, yes. The trunks of a multi-stem river birch rise from one shared base, so the grinder works the whole base down below grade in passes. Measure across the full base at ground level, not each trunk, and send that with a photo. That single number is what the quote is built on.

Is one stump in Horse Shoe worth the trip for you?

Yes. Horse Shoe is inside our normal area, and Jordan will price a single stump from two photos. If you have more, or a neighbor does, say so: the first stump carries the drive and the setup, so each one added to the visit costs less than it would alone. For the wider picture, see stump grinding across Henderson County.

How it works

How a Job Runs

Send two photos

One of the stump with something for scale, one of the way in, plus your town. Call, use the form, or email the photos.

Get your quote

Jordan quotes every job himself. Estimates are free, and you have the number before any work starts.

Lines get marked

Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them. 811 does not mark private lines, so point out irrigation, lighting, invisible fence and septic parts.

The grind

The stump is ground in passes to below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Tell us first if you are planting or laying turf and it goes deeper.

Clean ground

Grindings are raked back into the hole and topped, left in a pile for your beds, or hauled off. Any marks on the lawn get raked.
