Stump Grinding in Marietta, SC
Stump grinding and stump removal in Marietta and Slater: tight mill village yards, white pines brought down by wind, and sloping lots toward the mountains. Several stumps, or a job paired with others nearby, suit the trip.
Grinding and Removing Stumps in Marietta, SC
J. Harvey Cleveland laid out a settlement here and named it Marietta after his wife, Mary Louisa Williams. In 1928 the Slater family opened a textile mill and a village beside it, and the two places ran together into Slater-Marietta. Marietta is unincorporated, in northern Greenville County along the North Saluda River, with US 276 through the middle and SC 288 heading west to Pumpkintown. Behind it the Blue Ridge starts in earnest.
Measured from Tryon, Marietta sits at the edge of the map. It is worth the drive for several stumps, one huge or hard-to-reach stump, or a job that grows into clearing and hauling. A single small stump is easiest to slot in when other work is booked in northern Greenville County, so send a photo and ask how. The stump grinding page walks through a visit.
Mill village yards in Slater
Slater Mill came with its own village, and Slater Hall, the community center, went up in 1934. If your house is one of the old mill village homes and the stump is out back, the way in may be a narrow side yard or a small gate. The grinder is slim, on tracks, and made for ordinary garden gates. Put a tape across the pinch point on the route and send the figure along with the pictures. A fence panel only ever comes off with your agreement. More on tight-access stump grinding.
White pine and wind
N.C. State Extension lists eastern white pine as a fast-growing tree of the mountains and Piedmont, at home on high, dry ridges, and susceptible to wind damage. It also names white pine blister rust as a disease that usually kills it. Around Marietta that adds up to pine stumps after storms, and dead pines taken down before they fall. A trunk that snapped leaves an ordinary stump for the grinder. A pine that went over roots and all needs the loader or excavator to haul that mass of roots and soil away before the crater is filled.
Up the valley toward Jones Gap
The Middle Saluda rises in Jones Gap State Park, and for years Jones Gap Road was the only direct way into this part of the county. Above Marietta the lots get steeper, and a stump on a bank is a placement job first. A side-on picture of the bank tells far more than one from above. Loose grindings on a slope move in the first heavy rain, so they are raked back and topped, or hauled off. Steep slope stump grinding explains the setup.

Marietta Stump Questions
The big questions each have a full guide. Shorter answers are on the FAQ page.
Can a tracked grinder get into a back yard in the Slater-Marietta mill village?
Most of the time. Side yards there can be narrow, but so is the grinder, and it runs on tracks. Find the tightest squeeze on the way to the stump, often where a house corner meets a fence, then measure it and photograph it. In the rare case a panel needs lifting out, that happens only with your yes, and it goes back.
Will you come up US 276 to Marietta for a couple of pine stumps?
Ask, with photos. Marietta lies out on the edge, the drive counts in the number, and two stumps make a better trip than one. Big stumps, a job that can be paired with other work in northern Greenville County, or a neighbor adding theirs all help. Jordan will give you a plain answer on timing.
A white pine blew over near the North Saluda River in Marietta. What happens to the root plate?
The plate of roots and soil gets picked up in one piece, by loader or excavator depending on its size, and the hollow it left is filled. If the trunk has already been cut off, the plate may want to tip back, so leave it be until it is dealt with. Near the river, ask Greenville County Land Development about disturbing ground before work starts.

How a Job Runs
Send two photos
One of the stump with something for scale, one of the way in, plus your town. Call, use the form, or email the photos.
Get your quote
Jordan quotes every job himself. Estimates are free, and you have the number before any work starts.
Lines get marked
Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them. 811 does not mark private lines, so point out irrigation, lighting, invisible fence and septic parts.
The grind
The stump is ground in passes to below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Tell us first if you are planting or laying turf and it goes deeper.
Clean ground
Grindings are raked back into the hole and topped, left in a pile for your beds, or hauled off. Any marks on the lawn get raked.
